Question:

Oil paintings question

Someone called to the door selling oil paintings.

The paining was on canvas and felt real.

But I see there was two of type so the paintings weren't unique.

Why would an artist paint more than one of the same painting. Is it possible to mass produce an oil painting?

  1. Sometimes an artist will do the same painting more than once, but you would see some changes, it would not be an exact copy. If you see an exact copy, it is probably done on a computer.

  2. The are massed produced in the sense that there are factories in China and Taiwan where they have artists that paint the same scenes over and over, very fast. Some of them look good if you are looking for somthing to hang over your sofa.

  3. The answer is "yes" and "yes". Even though these are not "master works of art", it was quite common that a Master Painter such as Chagall, Miro and Kandinsky.....Picasso...etc...painted more than one piece of art which look almost identical with some minor alterations/changes. This is called "series art", in other words, they painted them purely for commercial purposes. Keep in mind that people painted throughout history which photography, generally speaking, has replaced and people painted for the purpose of documenting "life" and their surroundings and their way of life during any given period throughout History. The camera has taken place of much of art now; however, art remains a form of media just like television, movies, photography, theatre...etc....

Now, some artificial duplications do look almost exact to real oil, however, if you look very close you can tell the difference as real oil doesn't have quite the consistent "gloss" appearance to them. However, the most important point is that just because a painting may be a duplication of a true oil, it doesn't mean that it it doesn't hold the same value. Further, if you like the image and the art, who really cares if its real oil or not as long as you like to look at it when its on your wall   as the purpose of any piece of art is for your personal enjoyment.
