A friend of mine has a shop and I asked him the same question and he said every 2 stroke engine leaves his shop with 50:1 mix in it, never a problem.

The older engines that called for a richer mix, say 20;1 is no longer necessary as oil technology has advanced so much.

All you have to watch for in your oil is whether it is formulated for TC (two stroke air-cooled) or TC-W (two stroke water cooled)

Air cooled engines such as chainsaws, weed whackers etc. operate at higher temperatures as water cooled like boat motors so the oil is formulated a bit differently.

since outboard motor are soooooooooooo exspensive to repair--you had best call yamaha directly ! or at least call your boat mechanic.. never never never take chances with outboard motors ... since you'll be on the water when it quits.. you're screwed !!!  call your dealer..

With a small 2 stroke engine I would use about 20 : 1 . That works out to 6.4 ounces of oil added to 1 gallon of gas.
