  1. People forgets.  I remember when I was a kid the big banana boats of the late 60s and early 70s.  Todays the so called SUVs are the same c**p from those days.  I call them Today's Banana Boats.  In the mid 70s I remember that was worst than today.  You had a limited amount of fuel, some places you can only get fuel by the numbers (odd or even) on your lic plate and the days.  People ditched their huge cars and station waggons.  People adapted to drive smaller more fuel efficient cars.  Also, heard numerous times, how flimsy the cars were and no room on them... That does sounds familiar?

But anyway, is a fashion statement now days to have a huge vehicle.  Is like saying... I am rich enough to buy it and pay for the fuel and to maintain it.

I drive an 03 Chevy Impala.  Is a full size car.  I did a ski trip to Colorado with my wife, placed luggage, 2 sets of skis with equipment (all inside the car), drove in the mountains, never got stuck and I average 30 MPG on gas worst of 27 and best as 35.

What I am saying is, you never use the SUV at its full potential.  You are not hauling stuff every day, you do not use the full cargo capacity every day, you do not use the 4x4 every day...  so why paying for that extra stuff that you do not need?

I have a trailer hitch on my Impala.  I paid $500 in Home Depot for a 350Lbs (empty weight) trailer (carring capacity of 1,600 Lbs).  I towed with my car on a 178 mile trip with a wash machine and a motorcycle.  I drove at 70 MPH and average 25 MPG.  We bought a swing set for the grandbaby.  I took the trailer and haul it.  Yard work?  I have a hitch ball on my Craftman Ridding lawn mower that I hitch the trailer with.

If you want it to be a grocery getter the trunk is huge and I never filled with groceries, beside, is low enough to load and unload stuff from the trunk.

Is the best $500 dollars investment I ever made, also, in my state, is not require to tag it either.

Consdier an option like that too.  Is the best of both worlds, the economy and room of a full size sedan, agility / size / ease to park of a car, insurance / tag / maintenance and the carring capacity option of a station waggon / SUV.

If you go to U-Haul they have also a lugage trailer that is covered.  Rent one in a road trip, return it and get another on your way back.  That is if you need more carring capacity to free up space for more occupants.  When all is over, you do not have that extra expense.  Or you can use the trailer that I mentioned before to tow your extra stuff, like camping gear and such.
