Ok, I have a GREAT invention. What are the necessary steps???

As I said I made up a great invention but i don't know the first step to going about this.. its a consumer product so do I make a blueprint of sorts? some type of drawing? Do I try and make one of these products myself? How do I get it patented? I'm broke as a joke so how does one do the "poor mans patent"? Any advice on how I can go about this or what to do when I do make this and become a millionaire.. Do I sell this product to a company or try to make my own company that can manufacture this? Help please, you guys are great!
