  1. Unlike the idea of dark equating with evil in the Christian mythos; dark refers only to the mysterious and less-understood side of the pagan mythos.  In pagan belief, where there is light, there must be dark, as Nature must always be in balance.  The Dark Goddess looks at the dark side of human nature, that which Christians believe in evil, but which really gives humans strength and endurance.

I don't know if you are familiar at all with the original Star Trek series, but there was one episode where Captain Kirk was split into two people, and 'good' Kirk and a 'bad' Kirk.  At the end of the episode Kirk said something to his crew people to the affect that the 'bad' side is what made him able to lead, to make the hard decisions and to weigh all the consequences.  The Dark Goddess addresses that side of human nature and tells us that our shadow selves are important and necessary to our being whole beings.

  2. Are you still sure you want to claim you've been raised with this stuff?  (as per http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;... ) Because the idea that "dark" does not equal "evil" is a pretty basic belief.

"Dark goddesses" are goddesses associated with the crone aspect and/or the waning and new phases of the moon.  The present things like death, destruction, transformation, wisdom, endings and beginnings, mysteries, the unknown, and so forth.  They are not evil.  All of these things are necessary in existence.  They are part of the natural cycle of things.

  3. Over time the Goddess has been viewed in many ways

by different cultures. Sometimes you will find a darker

version. Most noted for that are Hecate, Inanna, Astarte,

and Ishtar. They could be pretty nasty and people would

make human sacrifices to them, etc.

The truth is that the Goddess is very kind and benevolent,

and mankind should come to know Her as She really is

and stop changing Her to suit their own purposes. The

darker versions were created in societies which engaged

in excessive warfare.. you can see the connection there.

    Blessings,

    Jean

  4. There has to be balance. If there is goddess watching over the light then there must be one watching over the dark. That's just how it is, but it doesn't make her evil.

  5. There is dark and light, negative and positive, good and bad in everyone and everything.  Without one you can't have the other.
