.... for something cooked with a little more effort. I don't know what the dish is called, but it's just a layer of pre-cooked macaroni covered with a layer of pre-cooked minced meat and all this covered with a mixture of beat eggs, spices, butter, flour, milk and the whole thing is baked for some minutes till a crust forms.

My question is- I don't have a baking tin- can I improvise with an aluminium pot? OvO

  1. You can cook it in an aluminum pot with plastic handles, too, if they can withstand heat up to 500 degrees. Also, can I have the recipe? That sound really tasty!

  2. Hi sister,

You can use an aluminum pot, although it's not the healthiest...and if you have anything acidic in your recipe (like tomatoes or sauce), it could react with the aluminum. And aluminum can discolour your food.

Bambi is right about a disposable one...it can work a little easier and better than an aluminum pot.

Do you have any other type of pot or pan?

Line Dancer, you're funny...that was a good smile for this morning lol.

  3. As long as your pot can go into an oven because the dish you are referring to is baked in the oven... It is called PASTICHIO !

You need something deep enough to contain the layers of macaroni, mince and then the sauce on top.  I have known people to use an old biscuit tin (aluminium) for lack of having anything else - so improvise all you need to satisfy your craving.

    MMMM bon Appetite!

  4. This sounds like a variation of Shepherd's Pie, yum. Send me your recipe too pleeeease?

Anyway, a glass baking dish would work just as well if you have one.

Edit~~~ Did you get to make your dish? From the info you gave me, I made it for supper last night and it was absolutely delicious! My dear husband, the most picky eater in the universe, loved it too! Many thanks  :)  BTW.... I used a glass baking dish and it turned out fine. Didn't stick.

    (((Vot)))

  5. You can use an aluminum pan. Then cook the eggs in a microwave oven, and see what happens.

One word of caution: Stand back!

I'm glad that some of you know I'm just kidding. This clown on my job tried to dry his shoes in a microwave oven. The whole thing exploded!

  6. For what it is worth: I avoid all aluminum and microwave ovens for health reasons. You won't find either in our house including deodorant with aluminum in it. Aluminum is linked to Alzheimer's disease and other health problems. Microwaves alter the food on the molecular level & kill any enzymes in your food.

  7. An iron skillet yes, but not an aluminum pot.

If you have a disposable aluminum pan, yes.

LineDancer, YOU crack me up!! ;~P

    read your edit; u still make me laff;

    shoes in the microwave?!  LoL!!

  8. A pot has tall sides;  a skillet is flatter.  Aluminum is not the best metal for the oven, as it can warp;  cast iron is fine though.  Baking in a pot probably wouldn't let the air circulate well enough, since the sides are so high; but a cast iron skillet would work fine.... Don't you have a pyrex or glass dish that you can use?  ...  Go to a local Walmart, Big Lots, Ross or Marshall's, and get a 9x13" pyrex or earthenware baking pan to use.  You'll have it for life, and get alot of use out of it.  Yes, you can buy disposable pans, but the package would cost nearly as much as a new pyrex pan!.....
