Ok, i have a 1999 dodge neon. i recently had the power steering belt replaced, but its loose. also?

my air conditioning doesn't work. if i turn it on, it makes a horrible screeching noise. but i have to keep my car on the feet vents with the setting on heat at all times or it will overheat. my car starts over heating within two miles of driving. help me. tell me what could be wrong with my car.

  1. Your thermostat is probably bad.. it's an easy fix, and a cheap one too. It's a good start, and if that's not the problem, it's no great loss, since thermostats are prone to failure, and would have failed sooner or later anyway. Ask any of your friends that are mechanically inclined first if they'll change it out for you, or call around and ask what it costs to change out the thermostat on your car.. Part should be like $20 or so, and and hour or less for labor. Probably less than $100 to fix at a shop. The screeching could be unrelated, but it sounds like your serpentine belt is loose, and needs to be tightened up, when they put the power steering belt on, maybe didn't tighten up the other belt enough.
