  1. Masons like nothing better than symbols.  As mentioned the pentacle, pentagram, or 5 pointed star is a powerful and recurring symbol in many religions.  Some , like Satanism(by Christian definition) take inverted symbols for their own.  As I don't know your reference, Satanism has a middle point facing down, and (see numerous bands, malls(Spencer Gift), etc) it is also said to represent Satan, in the resemblance to a goat with the muzzle pointed down, the horns up, and the ears out.  In Wicca, the middle point is facing upward, and I don't know any particular significance, though often if inscribed on the ground for ritual purposes the point will face north(unless a different cardinal direction is being invoked for a particular purpose).  The inscription probably has meaning either to status/position within, as a ward/well wishing for the deceased, or in this case as a description of the cause of death, but that's just my opinion, I could be wrong.

  2. The pentagram is a five pointed star commonly associated with Wicca, Ritual magick, Satanism, and Masonry.

A pentagram enclosed within a circle is known as a pentacle.
