Welcome to Yahoo Answers. I just started doing a couple weeks ago, and I already have a copy and paste answer for the 2012 thing. I have come to learn that the Astronomy and Space section will often be flooded with email phenominon. But hey, using a copy-paste answer is an easy two points, and sometimes it gets picked as best answer so you have nothing to loose except maybe 30 seconds of your day.

It is pure and utter *c**p*. The reason why the Astronomy section gets it so often is because when you type in "Will the world end in 2012?" it automatically sets the category for "Astronomy and Space". And in a way, I am glad it does. Here, we give people scientific answers. People like Tom A, and Brant (and I try to) among others take their time coming up with answers to these questions because I've noticed that a lot of them are young children who really haven't got that much scientific knowledge or logic to back them up on these things. So we explain it to them, and at least they are getting the right answer. If it was put under paranomal or whatever, then people with tin foil hats would be answering saying "Ya dude the world is like totally gonna end >:( ZOMG MAN GET READY FOR THE END!" and that will just confuse them, and scare them more. As much as I would love to see all of the questions disapear, I would rather take the 10 seconds to copy and paste my answer and let them know the truth then letting some loon out there tell them otherwise.

The Mayans had two calendars.  The first was similar to the yearly one we use today.  The other continued out for a 5000 year cycle.  It's in 2012 that the long-term calendar comes to an end.  It's just the beginning of a new cycle (i.e. the Mayans didn't predict the end of the world, it was just the end of their cycle).  

People have take their end-of-the-world belief and invented or co-opted a whole series of doomsday events to validate their beliefs.  Scientists *haven't* predicted that the magnetic field will flip then.  Nostradamus didn't make any specific claims about 2012.  There is no such thing as Nibiru.  There will be no planetary/glalactic alignment, and even if there were, nothing would come of it.

For some reason, people are getting all crazy.  In effect, they've looked at the calendar on their wall, and said "Oh no! It doesn't list anything after December 31st!  That must mean the world will end!"

Seriously, I can't wait for 2012 to come and go, just so these questions will go away (at least for a few months, until the next end-of-the-world panic comes around).

1) The Mayan calendar does have 2012 as the end of the current cycle.

2) There is a a predicted alignment of the planets in 2012

3) The Earth magnetic field does cycle - the South and North Poles have reversed and that's expected to occur.

But these are separate and distinct events.

don't worry about it, its just the start of some new cycle or something, but the expert people say that.....no the world isn't going to end or anything like that.... just some dumber people interpreted it that way.  Apparently though they used it to plan for a "big change" whatever that means.

Take heed, but fear not for 2012 is just the revealing of the 'antichrist' or the 'man of lawlessness' at the middle of what Jews and Christians call the 7 year Tribulation. The Mayan calender,

The mayan calender have a 13 year cycle thing,

and it ends on the 21st of december 2012,

it's supposed to be the end of the world

becuase they predicted that the sun and all the other planets would align with the cente of the galaxy and that would affect the

magnetic field causing the earth to tilt very fast, creating huge snamis and earthquakes and stuff.

but they have evidence to prove this aswell,( not really evidence but enough)

through the nostra - damus book, it says something will happen, like islam will overthrow catholism and stuff.

but alsooo the zodiac signs has one hidden one where the saggitarius arrow points right the center of the galaxy and reveals a 13 zodiac sign which was hidden, and so that points back to everything being in line with the center of the galaxy, although we don't know what will actually happen

we don't actually know if the magnetic field will be effected or if nthing will happen.

We don't know.
