At the store it mentioned getting an HDMI cable........... what the heck is that for? I have the cable hooked up to it with a regular coaxial cable and the HD channels come in great. The only cable I have is the cord coming out of the wall with the round plug, the HDMI cable had flat looking plugs. I do have a DVR cable box on another TV upstairs, I really would like to keep it up there if there aren't any added benefits to hooking it up to my HDTV. (It's just hooked up to a regular TV now)

  1. LOL, I ran into the same problem when I got my HDTV.

I had them upgrade my cable box to the HD one - I thought I have one but I did not - the cable company upgrade the box quickly - since I had problems with the previous box but was being diplomatic about it - they hooked into the TV using the component hook ups - the analog hook up was not good. The component hook up is great with a really clear picture.

I use the HDMI hook up for a HD DVD player - I hooked up a regular DVD player and then the HDMI HD DVD player to see the difference - it was a big difference in clarity and quality.

If your quality is satisfactory of better to you - then I would leave it as is. I would suggest if you get a DVD player go with one that is HD that connect with the HDMI cables. You should and will see a difference.

  2. The coaxial cable would be your only hookup seeing that you just have basic cable. If you had digital cable with a high def converter box you would have a place to plug in HDMI cable which is supposed to give you the best picture quality and give you many more channels in high def.

  3. HDMI means that you can hook up other things other than tv.   for exampple, you can get HD video gaming, HD DVDs, etc.
