Ok, so the toilet won't flush?

So funny story, I'm staying at a friends place and he didn't tell me the downstairs bathroom was broken. There's no water in the toilet and I need to flush it. I think the water is off b/c the toilet kept overflowing. So my questions is: I know with a working toilet if you dump a bucket of water into it, it will automatically flush. Will that work with a toilet that has the water turned off? assuming there is no blockage in the pipes?

  1. yes

  2. consult a plumber

  3. You know...toilets aren't that hard to fix.  If its overflowing it probably needs a new "bobber" or float so it WILL shut off.  If that isn't set right it will keep running.  Anyways, to answer your question..YES it should work just fine!!!

  4. if it's turned off there is probably a reason.is the toilet in a basement, sometimes because the way the land lays it's not practical to dig deep enough to accommodate all the plumbing in the house, the sewage from  ground level and above are fed by gravity, but if you put in a basement the sewer might be higher than the toilet,so a pump is used to get the mess to ground level, then gravity feeds to the sewer.if the pump doesn't work you can't get the sewage up to ground level  ,so you turn it off,but if you are above the sewer, then if no clog is present you should be able to flush ,with a bucket of water ,you should not mess in other people's houses........tom

  5. yea it might

it also might make things worse

  6. yeah it'll work. Keep dumping water into it.
