Question: WHY do you enjoy Nascar?

I need to understand the attraction to Nascar. I have a friend that is trying to "learn" me something but all I see are a lot of left hand turns going way too fast!!! I REALLY want to understand the attraction.

(they wanted to post it in g*y, L*****n and Transgendered!!)

  1. 1) wild-bill-dude --slow ur roll. d**n,the lady asked,what's appealing. Not,why u get a "nut".

    MS.QUESTIONAR.I know a lot of women,who like to drive fast! (are u 1?). Sorry,I'll be brief.The honest answer is,WE (oh h**l-never mind).It's just something we like to do!(and I have)-(For a 1000.00 bucks,u get to "do it")  I'm so confused now! HEY "J"!!!! (EDIT-Hi ksdh31)

  2. i don't get it myself...i find it boring

  3. Well, if you just think of it as a few hundred left hand turns then you just don;t get it.  How many people can go 180 mph into a turn with 2 other cars on the out side of them, a car slamming them in the rear and a slower car in front of them and make it thru? not many.

On top of that, you have to figure out strategy for the race - what to do in pit stops, when to pit, 2 tires ... 4 tires... no tires?... gas and go? work with someone or leave them out to dry?   Your crew has to be made up of the best athletes/mechanics available.  You think the guys down at Jiffy Lube are gonna change 4 tires, fill your gas tank up, clean your grill and windshield, bring you a drink and adjust your car in under 15 seconds? Probably not.

Watch a race and if all you see is a bunch of left handed turns, then don;t watch anymore because you just don;t get it.

Like I don;t get hockey... or basketball... or golf... or tennis...

You either like a certain sport or you don;t. I don;t think you can be taught to like anything.

  4. Don't be a jim and look at it as a bunch of cars going around in circles. Look at is a race of 43 men who are doing what they love to do most. Look up the drivers. See if you can find one you like and root for them during a race. Watch some past races on Race Rewind on NASCAR.com. If that doesn't help nothing I can think of will. Can't tell you what to like.

Hey, at least you didn't talk trash about it like other Non-NASCAR fans!

  5. Welcome to the Family!

Don't let the naysyaers get under your skin.

I am a lifelong fan. My mom had a picture of me sitting in my dad's lap when I was about 4 yrs old watching a race on tv. I remeber going to races before I even in school.

The best advice I can offer you is to find a local track where you live and go for a Saturday night of racing. I bet you will be hooked.

    Again, welcome.

  6. First of all, thanx for not throwing out the usual crappola that we fans get so often. Personally, I think it's like anything else. If you dig it, you dig it. But sometimes a lack of knowledge can make something uninteresting. I like to put it like this. You know the clover leaf ramps for getting on the hiway? Take your car and drive around that thing a few times going so fast that you're on the absolute edge of control. Almost crashing. Then imagine that at 180mph. Add a car on each side 6" away from you. Now pretend there are 42 other drivers trying to get past you. Can you see why it's a little more complicated than just driving in circles? I suggest you watch NASCAR Raceday and some of the other NASCAR shows on SPEED chanel to gain some knowledge about the cars and drivers. Both are much more complex than they appear. If you can appreciate what these guys do and how they do it, you may find it more appealing. A lot of people don't really get into a sport unless they have a favorite team. In this case, a driver. Sometimes they are more entertaining than the racing. The rivalries add some spirit as well. Drama, drama, drama. I love most sports but very seldom enjoy watching unless I have a dog in the fight. The great thing about NASCAR is most fans have more than one driver or team they like so there's always someone to root for. And you will find that NASCAR fans are like none other. It's kind of like a big family. Have you ever been to a stock car race? If not, try going to your local track. It's a blast. And I hate to admit it, but there is a certain attraction to the wrecks. I got a feeling I'm gonna pay for that one. LOL. God bless you and yours and thanks for the interest and respect.

  7. i tried to watch a race one time,  i found it more appealing to give myself a root canal.

not talking sh-t about race fans but for me personally....not EVER going to be a race fan

  8. i love nascar. to me nothing is more sexier than watching 43 men race around the track.  Oh and to watch them win is even better my fave is Carl Edwards.

  9. I don't.

    I like Formula 1 racing

  10. Two words:

    Tony Stewart.

  11. To tell you the truth it is a mystery to me why full grown men would choose to drive around in a oval for some God awful length. I know that it is the sport of kings of hickville U.S.A.

  12. Well, I don't really know where to start.  Some of the answers are absolutely true.  As to picking out a driver, that's a hard question to answer as well.  My favorite driver is Jeff Gordon.  But I also like several other drivers.  I have been watching NASCAR all my life but of course when I was young I really don't recall any of the driver's except for a few.  I picked Jeff Gordon based on "hotness" as well as his driving ability.  I have been following him for years and years.

My suggestion is to go to NASCAR.com and just read about the drivers and get to "know" them and then go from there.  But just keep in mind that NASCAR has 3 divisions...Craftsman Truck Series, Nationwide Series (formally Busch Series) and Sprint Cup.

    Good luck.

  13. The attraction is that you are right they are going to fast around a corner and anything can happen. If you have never gone around a corner really fast I suggest you give it a try and see the thrill of what everybody else likes.

  14. halter tops

  15. I turned into a huge NASCAR fan by accident.  They had an office pool for Winston Cup races (NASCAR) where I used to work.  You paid $5 and they flipped cards, 1-10, to see what number you got for that week's race.  You got all the cars that ended with whatever number you ended up with.  I started watching, to see if my cars won or not, and really ended up addicted to it.  Once you get past the cars just going round and round part of racing, you see there is SO much more to it.  You get to learn about the drivers, owners and crews.  You learn about the different pit and fuel strategies.  You have the random wrecks, bad pit stops and mechanical issues that keep it interesting.  It's also a lot more enjoyable if you have watched it enough to pick a driver or 2 that you like.  I am in several different fantasy racing leagues so I am rooting for different drivers weekly, even though I have 2 or 3 that are my favorites.  With all the different cars, personalities and unknowns I never get too bored with a race.  Not all of them are as exciting as others but that is the same with ballgames and other sporting events.  If you ever have a chance to get to a live race it will also change your perspective.  Races are extremely exciting in person and the atmosphere is electric, with the roar of the engines and crowd.  Give it chance, it might grow on you.

edit:  Use whatever factor is most important to you to pick a favorite driver but it is more fun to cheer for a guy that wins a lot.  My wife thinks Jimmie Johnson is a really good looking driver PLUS he wins races and championships, it's a win/win situation in my house!  Jeff Burton (the driver of the #31 car) is one of the classiest drivers in NASCAR and is not a bad driver to have as your favorite.  Learn more about them before you pick, though, it will mean more to you if you make up your mind rather than go with what somebody else tells you to do.

  16. What I like about NASCAR, is the week in an out rivalries that set up. The drama. Stratigies. A driver may not have the best car, but smart game plans can get a driver up front. Watching a driver who spun out, or what have you, work his way up threw the feild, and making a hard run, Balls to the wall, with a few laps to go. Bumping and drafting. How last week, a driver worked well with another, last week, and this week they are bitter enemies.

  17. OK, compare sports.  Football, basketball, baseball, etc. etc.

    One team vs. One team.

Nascar, 43 drivers fighting for 1 spot.  (1st place)

2 cars bumper to bumper can go faster than 1 car can.

3 cars bumper to bumper can go faster than 2 cars can.

So on and so on.  there is so much to tell, and not enough room.

Look,  just pick a number that you like, or a color that you like, and watch one race, and follow the car you picked.  Hook, line, and sinker....Your done....

  18. So many reasons(the speed, the adrenaline rush,  the skill of the drivers, The American-ism of the sport, etc.),

One of my brother is a race car mechanic on a Indy car team. and I myself prefer Grand Prix racing to the Oval track for it's different lay-out. And yet, I find myself drawn to Nascar also.

  19. go to a real race and if it dont catch your eye and you start learning on your own then dont watch it

  20. it dosent get better then watching your favorite driver (dale earnhardt jr) win a race

  21. Two words.

    SREEEECH...CRASH

  22. My best friend is a huge NASCAR fan, I am sorry but even if he has free beer I have never been able to sit through an entire NASCAR race, after a couple hundred left hand turns it seems so repetitive. Not unlike the golf channel.

Show me some real off road rally racing or motorcycle races, even Grand Prix or hydroplane racing and I'm interested.

A live race would be great, anything live is better than on TV, but no races in this part of the country.

Hmmm, would it be more interesting if the drivers were g*y and the pit crews trannys??

  23. Haha. Well here in new york for some reason theres alot of rednecks and they all wish nascar came here more often. I hate it too, it would be more interesting to see a demo derby, or some kind of street race (we get more of those than NASCAR races I'm afraid).

Its probably mostly the speed theyre going at and the sort of bonding it provides, like other sports.

  24. People who don't like NASCAR or don't know a lot about it are normally into something like F.1.

The first step into understanding the attraction to NASCAR is NOT to compare it to F.1.

Second, support someone in the race. It is pointless trying to like a sport and try to get into it if you don't even support anyone.

Third, don't just think of it as left turns and lots of speed. NASCAR goes to other "road courses" aswell. Try to think of it as a grueling test of man and machine - near 200 + M.P.H. - hot temperatures - endurance - and tactics.

    :)

  25. I don't watch races anymore. So I really can't help you other than it's a vicarious thrill to be driving 3 inches from the wall drafting the guy in front by 6 inches, boxed on your right by another guy so close you could reach out and push him away all while doing over 200 MPH. Knowing that 1 pebble on the track and all three of you could be going home in an ashtray.

  26. I don't enjoy it. I'm just here because i'm bored.
