  1. I've seen a few Garands at gun shows. Be ready to spend $1000. I think the only requirements to buy a rifle is to be 18 and able to pass a background check. I don't know about Ohio, but in Texas it only takes about 15 minutes.

  2.   finding the WW-2 thru the CMP is even getting rare but at least you get a good gun for a fair price. some will give you a new (Junk) recievier,a nd recic, Parts from overseas. the guns are out of Head space and not safe to shoot. I've seen several from Big 5 sporting goods adn sent them back with a Gunsmith letter to be replaced with a new Gun. Be sure of where your M-1 comes from. Mine was in Military storage and cost a grand. If less then it is not of Pure US orig.  even if CMP.

  3. You need to be 18 to own a rifle, but there are no other restrictions in Ohio. I wish you the best of luck in finding a WW2 M1 Garand. They don't come cheap, if you can actually locate one in good condition.

I've wanted one for years, but refuse to pay more than about 250 for a milsurp. I'd go higher if it were truly American, but all I've found are foreign ones (Greek mostly) that were produced under contract during the war. Don't get me wrong, they killed n***s sure enough, but I want to know that the man who did the killing sang the Star Spangled Banner or Dixie in the process. :)

  4. you need to get a Civilan Marksmanship Program one, they are head and shoulders less expensive than the same gun elsewhere

    you have to be

    #1 a US citizen

    #2 18 or older

so you will need a photocopy of your birth certificate

#3 a member of a CMP affiliated organization.  Garand Collector's Association is an affiliated ogranization that sends out 6 nice magazines per year for $25, and they will send a notice to the CMP that you are a member

    http://www.thegca.org/membership.htm

#4 proof of some knowledge of safe firearms handling, by proof you have done shooting before.  This can be competitive shooting, member of the military, a concealed carry course where you fire at targets, hunter's education where you shoot at targets, or simply go to the local shooting range, fire your gun, and ask the range officer to fill out this form

    http://www.odcmp.com/forms/marksmanship....

You have to use this form and have a notary-public stamp it.  My bank has a free notary public for it's members, some places will charge $20 to do it.

    http://www.odcmp.com/Forms/1orderform.pd...

you then pay for your rifle plus a $22 shipping fee.

Even with all those fees, a CMP garand will cost you about 200-300 less than the same gun on the 'open market'

  5. Yes, the age to buy a rifle in Ohio is 18, as well as purchase ammo, etc.  If purchasing from a store, the usual 7 day thing is there.

Texas Pride is correct and the M1 Garand will be difficult to find, especially in good American form (loved the comment about the "Star Spangled Banner")   Tho, I am now a *coughs* yankee in Ohio, I used to live near Dallas, and many moons ago there used to be a type of traveling gunshow/swap thing produced by Bill Tillman Gun Shows, which set up in bigger cities in Texas.....much to see, lots to haggle over...tho not sure if this company or shows still exist..perhaps a dabble in Google/Yahoo...may assist you.  Sorry to not be more help..happy hunting  (grins) in your search...good luck.
