  1. its all about rythm...

  2. That's great that you want to learn how to drum!  I've been a drummer for a few years and I suggest that you jump right in asap, don't hesitate or wait.  You should definately get a private drum teacher and/or you can join band.  To really  rock it, you should definately join drumline at your school if their any good.  I think theres a thing called Drum Corps.  People tell me its a blast and that you learn amazing things with drums.  Drums are all about rhythm so study rhythm a lot.  Also, once you get started, really pay attention to your wrist control and technique.  Its vital that your hands and arms move properly.  Just get into the beats and rhythm and feel the music, it can make you feel alive and great!  Practice A LOT.  And lastly, the thing that I learned through drums that I loved most is confidence.  You have to have great confidence when playing drums cuz its not just another soft, mellow instrument, its loud and bold.  Play with all of your confidence everytime and just have fun and dont worry if you mess up or not.

Hope that helps!  Good luck and have a blast! =]

  3. Does your school offer beginner's band?  If not, usually you can pick up books on snare drum fundamentals at any bookstore or music store.  Also they will probably have videos as well.  I played drums in High School band but that was years ago.

Also find out if the drum line instructor or band director knows someone that gives private lessons or if they do on the side. Ask if they have a preferrence to matched or traditional grip.  Most schools start band in Jr. High, so if your already in 10th grade, you might find a drummer in your school that has been playing for some time who can teach you what he or she knows.  Practice on your grip, getting your wrist in shape, and learn to read music if you don't already - drum music is written slightly differenent than say for wind or string instruments but if you can read already it should not be hard to learn the difference.  Some basic fundamentals you will want to learn are a single and double stroke roll including long roll; 5 stroke roll, 9 stroke roll, 7 stroke roll; flam, flam-tap, paradiddle, flam-paradiddle. Get these down first and the rest is down hill.

  4. By 11th grade, you probably aren't going to be able to just jump in and start playing in marching band (unless there is a beginners band).

Better to just go buy a drum kit, and try to find some people to jam with.
