I recently posted the "whats better nikon or canon" question...Well I got some awesome answers...thanks again, but I stumbled on this.

http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d60.htm

Now take some time, if you have it, and read what he says about the d60, pretty much he's saying that he'd rather buy a d40 because its the same. Now I know theres a big megapixel diff. but apparently that doesnt mean anything...or does it? Is this guy right?

I need Professional answers....PLEASE!!! HELP!

  1. While I personally don't agree with much of what Ken Rockwell says, I do agree that the d40 is the more logical choice of the two if you plan to spend the money saved on a better lens. A higher quality lens on the d40 will yield better images than a lower end lens on the d60. While the d40 has fewer megapixels, it is also a more sensitive sensor with its lowest ISO being 200 (with no noticeable difference from other cameras at ISO 100). The d40 has been praised for its low light performance by numerous sites, including Mr. Rockwell's. Honestly, I don't see any good reason to upgrade from the specs page. I mean, the d60 is a bit faster (3fps instead of 2.5fps), it has a slightly more up-to-date metering system (that offers the same options as the d40), and it has a newer menu system, but that's all small stuff. The d60 also has a dust removal system, but if you take care of your equipment, that should not be a major issue. The only major perk I see from the d60 is the Vibration Reduction lens that comes bundled with it -- I can't speak to the quality since I have not used it, but the VR is a nice addition.

When I look at a camera, I look for ergonomics/accessability (both the body and the menus), the viewfinder, battery life, build quality, and speed. The two cameras are basically identical in this respect. I personally would try not to get sucked into the "Latest model" mindset that Nikon and Canon have been going for lately -- if these cameras did the job back then, they'll do the job now. So if it were myself making the purchase, I'd put the money towards a nice lens or an hotshoe-mounted flash.

  3. The nikon d40, and the nikon d60 are exactly the same camera. The physical size, dimensions etc. The only difference is the megapixels really, which matter to some extent. Do you think the nikon d60 would be two hundred dollars more expensive for no reason? Well, it wouldn't. The nikon d60 has four megapixels, which does make some difference, but how drastic it is will depend on whose using the camera. However, you should get the one you can afford. If you only have about 470$, you should get the nikon d40, but if you could afford to pay about 650 on a camera you should get the nikon d60. They are both great digital cameras, and you won't be dissapointed with the end result.

    Regards

They are both great cameras, that any beginner should be happy to have in their collection.
