PLEASE READ: I've been playing volleyball for four years and club volleyball for two. This year (my second year for club ball) I'm having a bit of a problem! Our first tournament is VERY soon like three weeks soon. And we are not ready! our problem is that our head coach gave our team three middles including myself, two outsides, and two libero's. But there's NO SETTER!!! this is very frustrating. So were trying to teach one of our outsides, and one of our libero's to be a setter! but they've never done it before. and i know how to set pretty well but........ i play middle because im 6'1 and i am a beasty blocker lol!!! Our coach is paniking cuz she want's to run a 6-2 but we end up with three of our tallest players in back row. i really think we should run a 5-1 that way we have another outside or libero but we don't know what to do!and our coach wants to run a W serve recieve and us players don't think that's a great idea! PLEASE I NEED YOUR HELP!!! and soon! Thank you all so much! :)

  1. Try to talk to your coach and say that it would be better to do a 5-1. I personally am a setter. So i totally think that a person who knows how to set should be setting. Also if you would tell your coach to let you or your best setter to set for the first tourney that would be better. Let the other girls who are in training still train and get prepaired. By then they might be ready for the next tourney! Hopefully! Wish you luck! Just speak up to your coach!

  2. Unless you guys are SURE you have two kids who can set, the 6-2 would be totally frustrating for everyone. If you as a 6'1" middle move to setter, you can make use of the setter dump or attack on 2nd hit but ONLY when you are in the front row. You have to make sure that if you are the setter and you guys go with a 5-1, that you have someone that can take the 2nd hit if you end up diving for a ball off the net when you are blocking.

It sounds like you had a bit of planning trouble at the tryouts, eh? For this first tourney, you will want to get the best hands available and go with a 5-1 offense. Bummer for you in not getting to attack much, but you can still be all over the block. You have to think "read - block - down - find the ball" when you are setting and blocking from the front row. I am curious to ask what age level you guys are - if you can make the move from middle to setter, that is a huge attention getter for college coaches. We had a girl from Oregon who went to a small private school (298 students) and was 6'4". Everyone else would say whoa - middle blocker, right? Well, here's the issue: they had another girl that was only 5'8" but could jump out of the gym (3A player of the year in 2007). This was two seasons ago - OES had these two kids, the 6'4" middle and the 5'8" monster hitter, run a 6-2 and play opposite of each other!! It was sweet to watch... both had great hands and knew how to make stuff happen for the other hitters. They took 3rd at state in 2007, with the 6'4" girl as a senior and the 5'8" girl as a junior.

The 6'4" middle turned setter is playing D1 ball at Chicago State. The other gal I believe is headed to Pepperdine on a full ride next year. Skills, I tell ya!

  3. Run an offense with one setter and try to get one of your best passing hitters or a libero to be the setter. I don';t know much about volleyball offenses, but that sounds like the most reasonable solution.

  4. It is totally okay to run a 5-1 in such a circumstance. And there's nothing wrong with having tallest players in the back, as long as they can pass. ;-)

  5. I know a college that had this problem for 2 years.  The had one young setter with an ATTITUDE.  While she was a good setter, she was not THAT GOOD.  I am not sure if she quit or if her scholarship was removed.  Since she was a freshman, they did not recruit another setter.

If you have good hands, I would suggest that you talk with your coach.  If your team could run a 6-2, you would be able to set while you are in the back row and hit and block while you are in the front row.  Your team could use the Libero as the other setter and the third middle to play right side for them when they hit the front row.  Or your team could use your outside as the other setter and would take advantage of her front row abilities and have her set when she is in the back row.

Or your team could use those two setters that you are developing.  You could run a 6-2.  The outside could stay in all of the time.  The Libero/setter could sub in during when that position is in the back row and have your third middle play right side when they are in the front row.

Or your team could use those two setters and run a 5-1 or should I say 5-2.  When the setter position is in the front row, your outside/setter would play right side and set.  When the setter position gets to the back row, your Libero/setter can sub in and set from right back.

Good luck.  If you have any further questions, please feel free to email me.

  6. Run a  4-2....?

  7. you should set some of the time for the better luck of your team. do it for them team...

  8. i don't really get your question but i know a way to help with setting, get a basketball hoop and try to set it in the hoop, do it with different angles and have someone bump the ball to the setter to try to make it in the hoop it really works i made it up myself and the coach used and it helped out a new setter a day before a game

  9. 5-1 is definately good cuz then all of your tall players have a chance to be in the front and can block...like wut you said...but make sure to have a back up setter just incase the starting setter cant make a tornament or gets hurt...hopefully that wont happen...but of course it all depends on the age level, the club, and the players so hopefully you do well...ive been playing vball for quite a long time and my current team is running a 6-2 offense cuz one of our setters is a really good hitter too....your choise and good luck during ur season!!! :D
