  1. Dear we fast for 30 days from dawn to sunset

So each day we have a meal/snack etc before dawn  and then open our fast at sunset.

  2. You don't fast for a month

You fast all day for a month

You eat at night, often a lot depending on belief and country.

It is worse when Ramadan falls in the summer when the day (daylight) is very long - temper, temper.

  9. The reason we fast is to gain piety and God-consciousness [taqwa in Arabic]. Think of it as your New Year's Resolution, except this means much more since we should try to rectify ourselves not for the finite pleasures of this World but for God Himself. This is a Muslim's second chance to finally set themselves on the Straight Path ordained by God.

O youu who believe! Fasting is prescribed to you as it was prescribed to those before you, that you may (learn) God-consciousness [taqwa]. (Qur'an 2: 183)

    And in Hadith-

Abu Huraira related that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever fasts during Ramadan with faith and seeking his reward from Allah will have his past sins forgiven. Whoever prays during the nights in Ramadan with faith and seeking his reward from Allah will have his past sins forgiven. And he who passes Lailat al-Qadr in prayer with faith and seeking his reward from Allah will have his past sins forgiven (Bukhari, Muslim).

Hello PB.  I see others have given you the basic facts.  No, we don't fast 24 hours a day for the entire month.  You're right, there'd be a bunch of expired Muslims if we did that, lol.  We fast from before sunup until the sun completely sinks below the horizon.  Since we follow the lunar calendar, which is eleven days shorter than the solar calendar, the month occurs eleven days earlier every year, marching around the calendar so that sometimes we are fasting during short winter days, and other times we are fasting during the dog days of summer.

We fast basically because God told us so.  Fasting during the month of Ramadan is ideally a way of effecting a physical and spiritual renewal.  By depriving our bodies, we humble ourselves and learn to have sympathy for the less fortunate people who are hungry every day because they simply can't afford enough to eat.  It allows us to discipline ourselves and have mastery over our bodies.  It helps us to cleanse our bodies from the year's habits and sometime excesses.  It helps to focus the mind when we are not distracted by food.

Ramadan is more than just fasting, however.  It is also a month of increased worship, when Muslims strive more in prayer and charity and learning.  It is a time to heal any old wounds between family and friends, to forgive and seek forgiveness, and to try to develop better habits that we can carry into the rest of the year.  A good fast is a wonderful thing

You are welcome to ask questions any time.  The website I have listed below has a wealth of articles and lectures for you to learn anything you want about Islam.

May Allah guide you to the best in this world and the next.  Ameen.

  11. The people who celebrate Ramadan do eat during that time...

They are only supposed to eat before dawn and after sunset.

So although their eating schedule is a little off they're still getting the food they need. :-)

  12. we only fast from sunrise to sunset :) yeah i think we would die if we didn't eat or drink for a whole month straight ;)

  13. 4) Fasting the Month of Ramadan:

Every year in the month of Ramadan,4 all Muslims fast from dawn until sundown, abstaining from food, drink, and sexual relations.

Although the fast is beneficial to health, it is regarded principally as a method of spiritual self-purification.  By cutting oneself off from worldly comforts, even for a short time, a fasting person gains true sympathy with those who go hungry, as well as growth in his or her spiritual life.

  14. Fasting from dawn to dusk. No eating, drinking or s*x during that time. First 5/7 days may be harder for some. After that it becomes kind of easy.
