  1. same thing as a lawn mower.... it's the spring loaded starting pulley.  You should be able to see a small hole in the top of the pulley. Put the rope through this and tie a good knot big enough not to go through that hole. Now wind the rest of the rope tightly around the pulley wheel.  Should be an arrow showing the direction but if not, I believe it's generally clockwise. Now the top of the engine or hood will have another hole in it. Slide the end of the rope through this hole.  Have someone slowly pull on the end of the rope until it's out as far as it will go. Might want to disconnect the spark plug wire first so the engine won't start. Now while holding the end of the rope that is extended, other person replaces and installs the top of the engine or hood.  The rope should have some tension on it as the pulley mechanism is spring loaded and wants to pull the rope back inside.  Measure off where the end of the rope should be and replace the pulling handle. Usually it's a T looking handle. You slide the rope through the T handle and tie another knot. While holding the rope, pull on the handle a little bit so the knot gets seated inside the handle.  Now grab the handle and slowly let it recoil around the pulley.  Now replace the spark plug wire, grab the handle and pull slightly until you feel it getting harder to pull. You're at or near TDC...Top Dead Center..of the pistons movement...valves are closed..if they have any at all on those small engines..but the compression inside the cylinder is getting close to maximum. Get a good grip on the handle and pull hard as you try to start it.  Eventually, the right amount of fuel mixture will be in the cylinder, the magneot will have kicked out its spark to the plug and it'll start. Slowly let the handle (and rope) get pulled back into and around the pulley until the handle stops at the engine cover. That should do it.

  2. I'd have gone to used book store having Internet access

to other dealers and got the search engine working on any

repair manuals written for the motor product in question.

  3. It sounds like the recoil spring broke.  They usually break on one end or the other.  Take a look at the ends of the recoil spring.  It should have a hook or a "T" shape cut into each end.  A recoil starter can be really frustating and somewhat dangerous to put together so would recommend that whether you need a new spring or not, find a mechanic to help you out.
