I have a one month old and i have a chest infection

When i get sick i get really sick

Often a normal cold turns into an infection and then on a few occasions i have been sick for months on end and sometimes hospitalised in the past

I cant take anything to help it as i am breastfeeding and my milk is drying up enough

I have tried steam and buttermenthols and still feel like c**p

HOW do i stop my little baby from getting this when i feed and hold him

I cant take anything

  1. SEE YOUR DOCTOR! There are some meds you can take while breast feeding. you really want to make sure that you do not pass your infection on to your child. Once you are better continue to breast feed and while you are sick use a breast pump to keep them from drying up. Sleep when your child does and for goodness sake ask for some one to help when they can. your health is just as important as your childs.

  2. Buy baby formula, get someone to help out with the baby and go to sleep...common sense...and I'm a guy. lol

  3. ask the pediatrician if it is ok to bottle feed.  If you get sick a lot this might be better for you and your baby.

if you need meds, you need meds. what good will you be if you are too sick to take care of your baby because you didn't take your meds.

go to the doctor for yourself. there are probably meds that won't harm the baby, but, if not, get a bottle and some formula! lots of babies don't have breast milk and they grow up perfectly fine.  I commend you for wanting to breast feed, but the health of the mother is just as important as the health of baby!

  4. I think it would wise to consult your local GP about your condition(s). You wouldn't want the baby getting an infection you have that could very well be contagious.

  5. I'm assuming buttermenthols are something you eat/suck on and contain menthol.  Menthol reduces milk supply.

If you need antibiotics most are perfectly safe when breastfeeding and will not reduce your supply.

Antihistamines and decongestants will reduce your supply but they aren't good for you anyway.

The antibodies in your breastmilk are probably protecting him.  Honestly if he was going to catch it he'd be sick by now.

You on the other hand need to make sure you drink enough, eat well enough and work on why you are getting this sick!

Sore throat sprays or lozenges are generally considered safe, as are cough drops. Avoid eating excessive amounts of cough drops containing menthol. Large amounts of menthol can reduce milk supply.

Drugs and Lactation Database (LactMed) - A peer-reviewed and fully referenced database of drugs to which breastfeeding mothers may be exposed. Among the data included are maternal and infant levels of drugs, possible effects on breastfed infants and on lactation, and alternate drugs to consider.

Enter the trade name or the generic name of the medication you are taking to check potential risk according to the FDA from category A (safest) to X (should not be used). You are also given the risk of the drug on the fetus, if used during pregnancy; and its effect on breast milk, if taken during lactation.

(Are you in OZ there's also one in OZ, you can call the Canadian one but that would be expensive and the time zone would suck.  I can find the OZ number if you need it)

  6. Go to your OB doctor....you can take some meds even while breast feeding...
