  1. they like dressing up as cops

  2. Kids like to mimic what they see everyday. You should try things like house, doctors office, vets office, school. They will also pretending to be things they are less familiar with but still like to learn set up a sandbox and bury small objects and encourage them to be archelogists, set up a weather station and let them be the weather man their are endless ideas check out "Prop Box Play" I can't remember the author but it is fantastic!! P.S NO GUNS BAD BAD BAD IDEA GUNS ARE NOT TOYS AND SHOULD NEVER BE TAUGHT THAT THEY ARE!!

  3. They love to pretend to shop, especially for things that they like.  My son loved to play toy store, we'd sit around all his toys, he'd walk around with a cart, choose some, "pay".  My daughter likes to do grocery store.

You can have kid set out the toys to sell, one kid be the cashier, one be the shopper.

They also like house - mommy, daddy, kids, sometimes one will even be the pet.

Boys may like to play construction crew with blocks and hard hats.

playing "school" may be a bit too advanced - they really haven't yet fully formed an idea of school yet to imitate it.  It would depend on how much experience with school they have had.

My kids also LOVED to play bus - they'd line chairs up and pretend to be going on a bus somewhere.

It has to be something very very familiar to them.

But at 3-4 they tend to still play parallel - that is - they are playing the same thing at the same time, but not really together.  As they get closer to 4 and 4-5, then they begin to have the skills to communicate effectively to work together at a common task.

  4. What you are describing is called 'DRAMATIC PLAY" in ece speak.  Basically, as you describe, children use props, outfits, music, specific to a particular activity/place.  Children assign roles to themselves/others and act out what they have inside them as a "script."  The benefits are enormous. Language skills, problem solving, fantasy, etc....It is all in dramatic play.  Another huge benefit is the ability for you to make some observations.  Look up dramatic play and see many sites with references/ideas.  You facilitate.....let them act this out.

  5. It depends ENTIRELY on the child.  Every child has his or her own interests.  To ask what they like to play "the most" depends entirely on who is in the group.  It's like asking, "what kind of books do adults like to read?"

  6. Acceptance and "Copy Cat".  A child (and adults) wants to be accepted by others.  A child does not know how to do a lot of things, but they can copy the actions of others.

Take the world of fashion as an example.  Would you wear the type of clothes that were popular or "in fashion" five years ago?  If you wear the same type of clothes that everybody else has on are you not a "Copy Cat"?

You are a little older and can think for yourself.  Yes, a child can think, but not at the level that you can.  A child just wants to be accepted and they are doing it the best way they know.

  7. i have a four year old preschooler and her favorite thing to play in school or in daycare in house where someone is the mother and someone is the father

  8. These days kids grow up in a technological world. You should try the pre school section on Yahoo Answers.Vets, doctors and nurses.

  9. maybe if you asked your question more clearly, people would get it and be able to answer. but, i'll take a stab at it... preschoolers like to play house usually when in a group because they like to pretend they are adults. they mimick behaviors they see adults doing.. however, often preschoolers are not old enough for interactive play, or are not interested in play together...they will sometimes play along side each other and mimick each other, but not really interact.

  10. If you are talking about dramatic play there are so many things that the children like to pretend they are doing. Most time it is what is happening in the real world. From grocery store, airplane trips, rock bands to being mom and dad and cats and dogs. My class of pre-k can sometimes get all nineteen children participating in a group drama, all on their own. It is wonderful to see such participation and cooperation!

  11. all kids like to act as grown-ups.. this is all they're exposed to before they meet friends in school. they kinda have this sense of showing each other what they "know" ((hence the group play))or like.. what they've seen from shows and stuff. they make it into a game.. and eventually.. their imaginations grow and they take their own perspective of their "world of play" and make it what they want.

alot of times they play things like these:

    singer

    ballett dancer

    house - (mommy daddy baby..)

    teacher

    --school, classroom

    shopping

    farm owner

    being the "boss"

    :)

    its simple really

  12. When I was that age -- and right up through elementary school

-- I liked to play "guns."  The scenarios varied (cowboys. war,

cops, etc.), but toy guns were always the essential element.

  13. Anything that includes food.  :-)

Grocery store, restaurant, home play-with table setting and food "stuff", etc.
