  1. Right...Here are the rules.

    No Runners........Type race.....Fraction of win odds.....Places .

2-4                       HC + NHC        No Place odds.        Pl void.

    5-7                       HC + NHC         One quarter               1st 2nd

8-or more            Non Handicap  One fifth                     1-2-3

    8-11                     Handicap           One fifth                     1-2-3

    12-15                   Handicap           One quarter               1-2-3

16 or more           Handicap           One quarter             1-2-3-4

So basically think that generally speaking 5-1 will get your stake returned if it is placed. Depends on how much you fancy your selection. Personally I never consider each way unless 16-1 or bigger. Just a personal thing.

Walk into any bookies, ask for a diary and they all include ready reckoner's to work out returns. (and they are FREE)

  2. Each way bets used to offer a high level of consistent return for your money, but now the best value bet is a win-single level stake bet.  Each way returns were reduced by bookmakers a number of years ago, so now they offer poor value in comparison.  There is a consenus amongst some experts that the best value each way bet is in handicap races with fields of 16+ runners.  In contrast, the best value single-win bets occur in small fields on the favourite.

  3. I beleive if you do each way... You then only get a quater of the winnings as each way goes down to 4th..

    I MAY BE WRONG

  4. You can bet on a horse to win and also to be placed. Up to 8 runners 2nd place only. From 9 to 16(I think) 3rd place is included. Above that in Handicap races 4th is included and in some big races with up to 40 runners 5th is also included. However let's stick to 1,2 and 3.

You bet £2 on a horse to win so therefor it must win for you to collect. £2 win on a 6-1 wins you £12 plus your stake =£14 to collect off the bookie.

If you bet £2 each way = cost £4 you are in fact betting £2 for the horse to win and £2 for it to be placed in the first 3 and you will get 1/4 the odds for it to be placed. So your £2 win get you £14 back and your £2 place gets you 1/4 of 6 which is 1.5 x £2 = £3 plus your £2 stake = £5 so your total winnings including your stake money back will be £19.

If you had backed your £4 to win you would have received £4 x 6 = £24 plus your stake = £28

You can also back it to be placed only and if it finished 1, 2 or 3 you would get 1/4 the odds.

Phew, even I will have to read that over again!

  5. If you bet each way on a horse then you only win a quarter of the odds.

So if you put £2 on a horse and he came in 1st 2nd, 3rd or 4th and he finished the race at 20/1 then you would only receive £10  plus your original stake.
