the problem is:

you wash dishes for a chemistry lab to make extra money for laundry. you earn 6 dollars/hour, and each shift lasts 75 mins. your laundry requiers 6 quarters/load.

how many shifts must you work if you wish to wash 10 loads of laundry?

  1. Alright....

    $1.50/ a load x 10 loads = $15.00 (total money you need for 10 loads).

    $8.00 a shift

You need to work 2 shifts, giving you $16.

  2. To wash 10 loads you need 10(6 quarters)= 60 quarters

    Since there are 4 quarters in a dollar 60 quarters=15 dollars (60quarters/4 quarters/dollar)

One shifts last 75 minutes that 1 hour and 15 minutes

15 minutes is 1/4 of an hour

So one shift last 1 1/4 hours

You make 6 dollars per hour so in 1 shift you make:

    1.25 x 6= 7.5 dollars

Dividing 20 dollars by 7.5dollars/shift will give you the amount of shifts needed to do 10 loads

    15/7.5=2 shifts

    Good Luck!

  3. First, figure out how much money you need to earn.

    10 loads of laundry x 6 quarters = 60 quarters = $15.00

Now figure out how much money you earn on a single shift.

    $6 / hour = $6 / 60 minutes = 0.10 / minute

    0.10 / minute x 75 minutes = $7.50

    Then divide:

    $15.00 / $7.50 = 2 shifts

    Answer:

    2 shifts

  4. (10 * 6) / 4 = 15 dollars

    3 shifts = 18 dollars

  5. I learned to use dimensional analysis from chemistry and it makes life a lot easier. I also write everything out:

    $6/hr

    75min/shift

    6quarters/load

    10loads needed

So then I convert to the easiest units in the equation..

    Minutes to hours:

    75min x 1hr/60min  = 75/60 = 1.25hrs

It's actually easier to see if you do 75 minutes times (one hour OVER 60 minutes). Then the minutes cancel out. You divide 75 by 60 and you get the answer for that. So 75 minutes is 1.25hours in one shift.

Then you convert dollars to quarters:

    $6 x 4quarters/$1 = (6)(4) = 24quarters.

Once again, it's easier to see if you do 6 dollars times (four quarters OVER 1 dollar.) The dollars cancel out and you multiply 6 by 4. So you earn 24quarters in one hour.

Then you just do it out again:

    10 loads x 6quarters/1 load = 60 quarters needed

    Finally:

    60 quarters x 1hr/24quarters x 1shift/1.25hr = 2 shifts

Two shifts are needed for 10 loads of laundry. You can check it again if you want to. Hope it helps!
