    Answer: Make sure that you aren't playing an HD DVD on a normal DVD player. Also know that your built in DVD player is normally of lower quality than an external DVD player. May I recommend you buying an external DVD player.

  2. DVDs are a variety of formats, and if your DVD Player doesn't support the format one is recorded in, it won't play it.

    Cheaper DVD Players may only play MPEG1 DVDs.  That is most likely your problem.  MPEG2 is the format most new DVDs are recorded in.  The Audio format may also be an issue....MP1, MP2, PCM, AC3....all could be on the DVD.

    Check the DVDs that play and see if the case indicates what type of MPEG standard was used.  This could lend a clue...
