My 4 month old daughter woke at 7am this morning and she had had a bm...brownish green...I left for work at 9am and my husband text me at 11 to tell me she had gone two more time...now he is texting me again at 12:40 pm to tell me that she has gone again...still greenish brown? Is this diarrhea? If so what do I do for her?

She is BF and supplemented with formula...she had 2 tspns of rice cereal with a touch of organic bananas last night before bed.

  1. once a baby starts on cereal/fruits/veggies, their bm will change colors. the greenish may be from the bananas... My son could not eat bananas for some reason. If the stool is not watery, its not diarrhea. Try to give her just cereal and see what happens. As long as she is not fussy, she is fine.. Dont worry about it. Wait till she starts eating MORE.. Then you will really be surprised on BM she will have.

  2. I am 100% sure this is diarrhea, and I honestly dont know what caused it, but I do think it has something to do with the rice cereal and the bananas. Usualyl 4 months is very young to be having solid foods, they suggest that until 6-12 months, and to do it slowly. Maybe that was too much for her. If it continues like that, AND she doesnt seem to be eating, deff. call the doctor.

  3. I would not worry to much unless she seems like she is in pain. Also if the food is new to her, she is just adjusting to it. Just keep an eye out for other symptoms

  4. well the first thing is to ask how solid the BM is. If it is liquid then you have the obvious "yes" but if it is semi solid then i'd just say she probably has that reaction to bananas but that doesn't mean it is a bad reaction. THeir little systems have to learn to cope. The only thing is...generally at 4 months old they are only receiving cereal and milk. They go on to other things around 5 months but you have to make sure to introduce them slowly (one food at a time for one full week to make sure there is no allergy), My son would get horribly stopped up with bananas but then he wasn't BF by the time he ate them so there was nothing to loosen the BM. It doesn't sound like anything to worry about though.
