Horse riders are seriously insane!!!!!!!!! To want to do this, you have to have that important part of our brain that say "stop, this could end badly".

I means seriously who else thinks we all need a good lobotomy?

  1. Honestly, I don't care if it kills me, I will ride until the day I die and if horses are the reason I die than so be it, but I would die without horses.

  2. to answer your question, a quote from some book i had a long time ago.

"Riding is not a sport, it is a passion; if you do not share the passion then you do not know the sport and are therefore wasting your time."

don't have a clue who said i just like it!

ppl do all kinds of crazy things, jumping off buildings, cliffs, driving in circles at 250mph...

  3. Honestly, I'd rather have "died from a riding accident" on my tombstone than "died from overeating" or "died from falling down the stairs" etc! Anything could happen at anytime and a horse accident to me is not up there in my top ten most feared list. I don't stop driving because people get hurt, nor do I stop walking downstairs for fear of falling. Horse riding is my life and I love it. Yes, I've had some bad falls, but any sport has risks. (did you see the weightlifter dislocate is arm in the olympics yesterday?). I choose my risks and take safety precautions. That's the most one can do!

  4. Hello,

    My input:

WE are all going to go sometime!  Spend some extra money on a nice safe horse.  THEY aren't all crazy and stupid...and it makes riding a lot more pleasurable when you ride a nice, sound, level headed, broke horse!

YOU need to learn to "stop and smell the roses" as my long gone father use to tell me...  He knew he was on borrowed time and wanted me to know to live my life to the fullest and pursue my own interests...

YOU could die any day, any time, any where...  why live worrying so much about that!  DANG, you realize that all living things die don't you?  GET out and live your life...  YOU don't have to do something crazy, but it sure shouldn't stop you from having fun, doing what you love.

ONCE again, if you like riding horses, WHY give it up???  BUY your self a trusty mount and get out there and ride...  YOU don't have to ride like an idiot, just ride.

  5. Hahahah yeah your right.... all us horselovers must have brain problems. But look at race car drivers and sky divers. Everything has it's dangers, and it's better to end your life doing something that you absolutely love with every fiber of your being then die of something else. If your worried about dying of a riding accident, then you shouldn't drive, bike, fly in a plane, use electricity, or basically move your body because you have more of a chance of dying from something related to that. You know that from using your computer right now radioactive waves are headed for your brain? You probably have more of a chance of dying from a brain tumor than a riding accident. Like everyone says, you only have one life.

  6. it's our insanity that makes us so much stronger and tougher than normal people. also, it makes us a whole lot easier to love! lol

oh my gosh... i just read the rest of what you had to say and you were serious! don't stop riding! i'm sure you are great (from what i can tell from your answers and knowledge) and if you stop now, i'm sure you are gonna get back into it! SO THERE'S NO POINT IN QUITTING! get back on your horse!

  7. I think its everyone not just horse riders. I mean most of us drive cars, thats pretty scary when you think about it. Plenty of us have crazy car accident stories and I'm sure more people die in car accidents than horseback riding accidents every year. I guess its all in what's normal. i mean you can't really go without cars so people accept the risks, but horses are extra so people are more aware of the dangers. It's an interesting thought but I won't stop riding. I do as much as I can to stay safe around my horses and I'm aware that there are dangers. But its not enough to wrap myself in a bubble. Anything can be dangerous. We just have to pick what we love and try to eliminate as many dangers as possible.

  8. i like horse riding. it's getting the thrill of it and the hang. it's scary in your first few times but it's also cool.

  9. You can get killed walking across the street...Life is meant to be lived and enjoyed.  The older you get the easier things break and it takes longer to heal.  When we age we find out that we are not unbreakable and with everything we do something bad could happen.  Some stop doing the things they love, others will keep doing crazy things...I rather enjoy what i do and not hide from fear.

  10. Oh yeah, I was totally thinking the same thing when I was watching that Olympic cross country the other night.  It scared the **** out of me, and I was thinking I had been nuts for ever trying that.  And after I saw the 4th rider eat it, I felt justified in my thoughts!

EDIT: Dreamy and Azeri make very good points...

  11. I worry a whole lot more about being killed in a car accident. I trust the horses I ride more than I trust the other drivers on the road.

Besides, how many times have you heard people say; at least they died doing what they love when killed doing their most favorite thing in the world.

I really think when it's your time to go, it's your time to go. No matter what your doing or where your at.

  12. The mortality rate for humans is 100%, last time I checked, so my feeling  is that I should do what I enjoy doing, which includes risking life and limb riding and handling horses.  I have no fear of death, and I think the day we're going to die is predetermined, so I don't worry about it.  I think it's intelligent to take precautions to preclude injuries, if possible, such as wearing a helmet and vest when breaking nervous horses, (and wearing a seatbelt when driving down the highway with the all the crazy, bad, inept drivers). But, if you feel as you stated  about riding and have a fear of death, then you definitely do not belong on a horse's back.  For me, life wouldn't be worth living without the excitement of equestrian sports, and I'd rather die doing something I love to do, than die of a heart attack as a result of coronary artery disease which developed due to my laying around on the couch eating bonbons and watching TV. But hey, each to his own!  No insult intended!  A good point, you made.

  13. One of my biggest worries is that at my funeral there won't be a good story about how I died.  You know, the type of story where everyones jaw drops and they say, "Holy c**p!  What a way to go!"

I think you are crazy if you don't ride, or do something similar.  You only live once.

  14. Scripture tells us that "your next breath is not assured to you".  The things that we love are in our lives because they make our lives worth living.

Several years ago an acquaintance of mine was killed saving a co-worker from a Siberian tiger.  He was a dedicated rehabber and handler of big cats. All who knew him agreed that he died doing what he loved and wouldn't have had it any other way.

  15. The fact that I love riding so much (I've been riding since I was 5 and don't plan to stop) keeps me from ever wanting to stop because of what can happen.

It's not just riding horses, you can be killed or hurt just as easily driving a car, etc. Even tripping and falling from walking can leave you with serious injuries depending on the circumstances.

  16. This quote is good.

I do not intend to carefully tiptoe through life only to arrive safely at death. ~Anonymous~

  17. Meh.

The way I see it: Life is SHORT no matter how you spend it. I mean I could try to spend my life doing everything as safe and then get hit by a car or die of cancer at a young age. I'd rather know, that when I die, I lived my life as I wanted it and took risks that made my life better and more enjoyable.

I love horses and jumping. Cross country and SJ are my idea of fun. I take precautions, I wear a helmet (ok well at least 90% of the time, always while jumping), but if I am terribly injured to the point of near death while riding (knock on wood), but manage to make a comeback, the first thing I would do is get back in the saddle. And yeah maybe horseback riders are crazy, but for me, I can't think of anything more amazing than cantering flat out into a big jump.

I have taken bad falls, broken bones and been knocked unconcious by horse accidents. I respect anyone who says that they don't find it worth the risk, but for me, it's worth too much not to risk it.
