  1. - The large bankroll is as important as the skill. The man who popularized card-counter was Edward O. Thorp. He did the original analysis on a computer in 1960-61 on a computer (computers were difficult to get access to in those days). He was able to turn a bankroll of $10K into winning of $11K in one weekend. ($10K equals $650K in today's money). But you'll note that he doubled a very large sum of money. He did not $1K into $50K. There is nothing in the theory of card-counting that says you can turn a small amount of money into a large amount of money. The venture capital was provided by a mob associate, Manny Kimmel.

    - Manny Kimmel also protected Edward Thorpe from the mobsters in the casino. Casino bosses had no compunction about cheating lucky players in those days. Casinos don't cheat today, instead they institute a lot of rules that lower the expected value for the player.

    - Edward O' Thorpe made his real money by writing the book "Beat the Dealer" which sold 700,000 copies ($1.95 each). What he made in royalties sure beat what he won in gambling that weekend.

    ---------------

The other problem is that card counting depends on varying your bet up to five times your base bet. If you are doing this methodically, it is obviously very easy to spot by the pit boss. For over 35 years players have been trying to beat this strategy usually by working in teams.

  2. In my opinion, you should not try to count cards.  Casinos have techniques to combat card counters.  After all is said and done, you will probably lose more money trying to count than you will win.  A better way to try to beat the casino is to study strategy.  Study the odds and why you play certain ways.

  3. when you are ready to practice, you can do it online.

Just make sure to find a place with a live dealer, like LazerWager.com
