In a castle there lived a Duke and his wife and their servants. One morning the Duke was dead-murdered by one of the other people living in the castle.

When the residents of the castle were interviewed by the police, *every person gave two correct answers and one lie* This is what they said:

1. The Dutchess

a. I didn't kill the Duke

b. The gardener killed my husband

c. I'm not guility

2. The Cook

a. It wasn't me

b. I have been working here for 27 years

c. The butler knows who's done it

3. The Butler

a. I am not the murderer

b. The chambermaid is my witness; we were playing cards in the kitchen last night

c. The Duke was killed by the cook

4. The Chambermaid

a. I didn't do it

b. I wasn't even here last night

c. The gardener did it.

5. The Gardener

a. The Dutchess is lying when she says I did it

b. I am innocent

c. The butler is the murderer

Who murdered the Duke?

  1. k umm i didnt even read all of it it gave me a headache i think the gardner did it tho

  2. was it either the cook or the butler?

  3. I bet it's the gardener, because the Duchess had to have told the truth about that.

  4. The Cook did it. See below:

    The Butler:-

    a. I am not the murderer TRUE

    b. The chambermaid is my witness; we were playing cards in the kitchen last night FALSE

    c. The Duke was killed by the cook TRUE

  5. The murderer is the cook. One thing that I found suspicious is because everyone accused someone else of the murder, but not the cook. The cook said in c. "the butler knows who done it." but how come not "the butler killed the Duke" or something like that.

    2.The Cook

With that suspicion, we'll do a little tracing back. "the butler knows who done it." if that's the truth, then what the butler say in c. "the duke was killed by the cook" would be true, because he does know. so, the cook has one truth out. between a. and b., the only helpful clue is a. so we assume b. is true and a. is a lie; It was the Cook.

    3. The Butler

As mentioned above, what the butler say in his c. is true, so it leaves a. and b. A. has to be true because he's not the murderer, so that leaves b. to be a lie, about the chambermaid playing cards with him.

    4. The Chambermaid.

With the lie that the butler told about she playing cards with him, then she must have told the truth when she said she wasn;t here last night. so that leaves a. and c. and of course, she didn't do it, because the main suspect is the cook, so a. is true, which means that the garderner did not do it.

    5. The Gardener.

With that lie the chambermaid told, the garderner then is telling the truth when he said he is innocent; b. the butler cannot be the murderer, so that's a lie for c.. and that leaves a. to be the truth.

    1. The Duchess

and indeed the duchess was lying when she said that the gardener killed her husband, so that means b. is a lie. as for a. and c., both has to be the truth, because if one is true and one is a lie, it would contradict each other. but both cannot be a lie, because everbody only tells 1 lie.

If all these interpretations are right, then what everybody say would fit perfectly. and of course, the murderer is the Cook!

  6. chambermaid

  7. The Cook

  8. all of the evidence point to one person only and that is.... the cook

  9. the gardner!

  10. The COOK DID IT!
