I need to know...how do you celebrate St.Patrick's day? Any special Irish traditions? What about other Irish holidays? I'm doing a report, and I have to compare and contrast Irish culture with America's. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Wel in Wexford (New Ross 2 b exact)!!!We hav a parade wit lots of different floats dat a lot of children get involved in!!Day giv prizes 4 d best over all float n 4 d best costumes etc.!!!Bt my fav part is dat most of d shops turn d ice-cream GREEN!!!!I luv St.Patricks day!!!!!!O ya n we usually go 2 mass in d mornin!!!Its a rit craic!!!!

What? pigs over our heads? thats a lie.

Anyway, everyone goes to a parade - local or to the big one in the city centre of Dublin. The rest watch it on TV.

It's a great craic!

The only other Irish holiday celebrates the Easter Rising of 1916. It started last year and is a military parade.

we do throw pigs over our heads.dublin people dont know this cause there only jackeens.st patricks is one of the many things forced upon us by the british.traditionally were pegans.Christianity was in ireland long befour st patrick via the celts trading with romans.and a lot of irish saints(not st paddy)are actually pegan gods and goddess's.one that spring to mind is st bridget.the celtic cross symbolizes paganism too.the circle is the pegan symbol for ever lasting life.so as for traditional st patrick day its just dress green, go to mass, see the parade, drink a drink from a company  that the wouldnt hire catholics for most of its history and very anti irish (guinness) and thats as traditional as it gets.

Im Irish, so Ive spent most st. Paddys days in Ireland. In 2001 I was in New York for st Patricks and it was so much fun. So different to how we celebrate it in Ireland.

Usual st Patricks day in Ireland :

Get up, go to mass, wear a piece of fresh shamrock pinned to your chest (which usually goes limp and dead looking by the time mass is finished),  have dinner with the family (boilded bacon and cabbage), go to the pub, get extremly drunk, miss the parade because you're too drunk to stand up, pass out in a pool of your own vomit at the side of the street usually while its still day light, wake up hours later in your own bed not knowing how the h**l you got there, miss the next day of work because you are too sick to go. Well thats how most adults celebrate it. Its more fun for the children, parades, music and dancing in the streets, games and face painting and things like that...

I found that in New York there was more emphasis on the parade and wearing green and looking "Irish". The music and entertainment was great, there was more of a party and fun and social atmosphere, rather than just people getting drunk.

I enjoyed it and would love to go back some day and celebrate St Patricks Day again in New York, but its fun in Ireland too..

It's a mass day and a parade day followed by lots of drinking and partying.  We may were shamrock but dont necessarily were green.

I dont really do anything! we get the day off school and usually there's a parade in town but its so crappy I wouldnt be bothered going. I always watch the parade in Dublin on TV and we have a family dinner but that's it really. sorry to disappoint :D

Most people go to mass in the morning. Then usually after mass they go and watch the Paddys day parade. Then you've guessed it. Most of us go to the pub for the rest of the day and have a few to many.
