  1. jails are most often run by sheriffs and/or local governments and are designed to hold individuals awaiting trial or serving a short sentence (one year or less)

prison is a facility for ones who committed more serious crimes and stay under criminal justice system for more than one year.

  2. Jails are city and county. Prisons are state or federal

  3. one is federal one is state....

  4. Jail is in the city or town and run by the local police force or sherrif. Jail is where you go when you get a DUI, trespass, violate a restraining order or they simply hold you when you are awaiting trial. They will also put dangerous criminals in jail temporarily until they can be safely transported to a prison. You are not in jail usually longer than 30 days. In jail you are usually in an open bay cell with bars somewhere in the police precinct or jailhouse. When you are transported to jail officers have confiscated any weapons or drugs but leave you with your original clothes and will simply put you in handcuffs.

Prison is usually in a remote area and run by the state or in the case of a federal prison (the national government). Prison is where you go after you've been sentenced to a serious crime. Prison sentences are from a few months to life. Prisons are protected by fortified compounds with electronic gates, multiple gaurd towers and 20 ft. razor wired fences. When you are transported to prison you are usually in already in an orange jumpsuit (or whatever the prison uniform is) and shackles.

Technically, a prison is a "type" of jail and in common language when someone says that "so and so is going to jail" they can be referring to either or. But a jail is not always a prison. Sometimes it's just a jailhouse, single cell, brig, holding room or basement dungeon. "Prison" refers specifically to a long term, high security lockdown facility.

  5. jail is where you go temporary prison is long term
