D-pad = Directional Pad,  if you've ever seen a PS2 controller its the directional pad in the left most button configuration.

It is also known as Digital vs the Analog stick, it is digital because You can only move in a fixed number of directions as opposed to the analog which you can move in many different directions, infinity varying.
