  1. Pine bedding is usually good and won't give rats respiratory infections.  Cedar is the one you want to stay away from.  My guess is that you didn't keep the cage clean enough.  Don't feel too bad; rats are really prone to respiratory infections, and you need to be pretty vigilant to prevent it from happening.

And yes, any cage mates could catch it pretty easily.  I would put both of them on Baytril to be safe (the infection won't clear up on its own; it will only get worse).

  2. No, aspen is a safe bedding. Aspen is a hardwood and does not contain dangerous phenols like pine and cedar do. Pine and cedar are softwood beddings and contain phenols that damage the respiratory system and liver.

Respiratory infections in rats are usually myco related and most rats already have it somewhat dormant in their system so usually it isn't passed from one rat to another.

  3. It is possible for a rat to get an infection from another rat. But I am pretty sure that they don't spread respatory infections. I am also pretty sure that the bedding you have now is safe for your rats. For different bedding try CareFresh, Aspen, and Yesterday's News. ven though Yesterday's News is cat bedding it is probally one of the only safe cat beddings for rats.)

  4. kaytee aspen absoulutely COULD NOT give him/her a respritory infection. aspen is one of the best types of bedding/litter you could buy. never buy cedar or pine shavings. those are the ones that cause infection.

and do you mean is it possible for one rat to get a resperitory infection from the other? cuz if thats what your asking, then i  think they can, but look it up online or ask a vet just incase.

oh and dont forget to take your sick rat to the vet!!

    good luck!

  5. Okay so I have two rats, or had. One of them died from a respitory infection (not to damper your spirits)

Aspen bedding is proven not to cause the infections. It's the cedar shavings. So get anything but the cedar shavings. The dust from the Aspen may be irritating the rats nose/eyes/mouth and may make them more uncomfortable if they have the infection. If that is true, I suggest getting a bedding like the Carefresh. It's great.I ave had many small creatures and that's all I have used for them/ But don't feel bad. Many, many, many rats are born with Upper Respiratory Infections, because they get it from their mothers minutes after birth. Don't feel bad - it isn't your fault. Good Luck and I hope your rat gets better.

And yes the infections are contagious, so I would move your other rat to another cage immediately. If your other rat is lucky, then she will have a strong immune system (like my surviving rat) and she won't get the infection.

  6. rats can get sick from other rats!!!!ttoitet paper is the  BEST bedding-good luck-

  7. yes, any kind of wood chips can give a rat respitory infections. i recomend carefresh bedding (it's paper pulp) it smells nice and the rats love it. and to the other question yes, respitory infections are highly contagious so i reccomend isolating the sick rat for up to ten days so the other will have less of a chance of catching it (put the healthy rat in another place other than the cage). the already sick rat needs to go to the vet imediatly and get some treatment because respitory infections can be life threatening. if the other starts developing symptoms(red fluid from eyes and nose, sneezing, wheezing etc..) its very important to get them to the vet a.s.a.p so she can perscribe some anti-biotics to fight the infection.
