  1. If you can't swim you can't go in the deep end, it's as simple as that. And if you panic you probably shouldn't be in the pool at all, not even in the shallow end because like someone else said panicing is one of the worst things that you can possibly do.

For now just build up your strength until you know for a fact that you can swim from the point where you can safely touch the shallower part of the pool down to the wall at the deep end. From there you can get out of the pool if you want to but for now you have to learn not only to swim but also what to do in a drowning situation.

I know your instincts are hard to overcome but if you should ever find yourself drowning get someone's attention and they follow the procedure of "reach, throw, go" at a pool (on an ocean, pond or lake "row" would be added in after throw) meaning that first they'll try to reach out to you with a long object (least chance you'll put them in danger, that's how this whole thing was set up). Next they'll try to throw something like a life ring and if necessary someone will swim out to try and save you. In your case you were classified as an actively drowning victim which is the second most dangerous of the 6 types of victims. The most important thing to remember in these situations is don't grab on to them, they'll grab on to you. If you grab on to them they'll kick out and you'll be stuck drowning more so if you don't panic and don't grab on to them they'll be able to get you out of the water quicker than if you didn't make a big deal out of it.

Also, one last fact: unless you're submerged and can't be seen by a rescue person or people you're chances of survival are very high, maybe 1 in 10,000 die but that's usually because the rescuer(s) did something wrong. If you're submerged for an extended period of time you have higher chances of things like permanent brain damage or multiple organ failure. Also to retrieve a submerged and unseen victim rescuers will have to look under water and organizing one of these can take up to 3 minutes which in most cases would be when short-term memory loss starts to occur. Any longer and permanent brain damage and/or multiple organ failure could occur.

  2. Sounds cheesey, but the worst thing you can do in any situation is panic, and you did.  Get to the pool at a time when you know you'll be closest to the edge, either really early or late.

  3. You panicked because (1) you underestimated how long is the pool (I assume that this is a 50 meter swimming pool by the way you described it) so you think you can swim from one end to the other and by the time you realized it, you were already exhausted and (2) you have not swimmed for a long time so no practice or warm up.

My advise is that if you have returned to swimming after the non-activity (I mean not swimming for a long time); (1) you should have slowed down in terms of doing laps or did not push yourself; (2) stick near the gutter area at least you have something to hold into if you get exhausted.  Once you do these, you can slowly regain your pace or resistance level up to point that you can do your laps with confidence and not resort to panic attacks.

P.S.:  I was one month absent in the pool due to surgery.  When I returned - I started again slowly.

  4. well its been a while. sounds like a long while to forget how to swim. but in anycase, practice swimming not horizontally across the whole pool but vertically from the shallow, that way you dont drown haha and just practice really, if you could swim that far then you just need to practice at it.

did you work out bad before or were in dying tired shape?

be more specific on the question, what you did before etc.

    hope i was of help
