  1. They should be helping you understand and practice the material if you need help, kindly ask for it.

  2. It is difficult to put a time factor on how long proficiency takes as everyone has a different potential to learn.

The first time in  a karate class is bewildering and full of uncertainties.  After a while, you will begin to pick up more and more of what you're taught and as long as you have good, patient instructors, you will do fine.

You just need to be patient and don't quit prematurely.

I am 2nd kyu brown belt in wado-ryu karate and it was about 1 month before I started remembering all the techniques that we were taught.

I was 33 years old when I started.  Good luck!

  3. I don't have experience in karate, but I felt exactly the same when I first started ju-jitsu. Don't worry about not getting everything right away- give it time! :)

  4. hi im a black belt in wado ryu karate-do. it will take you 6 months or so to get a feel for it then when you get your first grade you will be on your way..

    stick with it

  5. Hi there

It normally takes somewhere between 3 to 6 months to start to get a feel for it. Master the basic kihon waza, stances etc and get a feel for the so called I or H shaped forms. Pick these things up and the rest will follow. Its not for everyone and clubs will vary. Some will be more traditional than others but in essence its a very traditional style.

    Best wishes

  6. Actually a lot of martial arts is about copying someone else demonstrating moves just like dancing i guess (I have never taken a dance lesson but I assume that is how they work), so you can think of it as learning new routines, at first they are completely alien to you but soon you learn them and begin to find it all very easy. So even if your instructor doesn't explain much just copy the higher grades, when you get a bit better and have shown dedication then he or she will spend more time correcting your mistakes and guiding you.

It can be very difficult for an instructor to spend lots of time with beginners as there is too much to correct at this initial stage and they haven't yet shown dedication which higher grades have. (unless, of course, it's a beginners only class, then there no excuse, and I would suggest trying a new club)

In any case in about three months time you should pass your first grading which will mean you have learnt and been tested on many basics and are starting to make good progress. Keep it up, it's worth it

  7. stick with it, its supposed to be a little overwhelming at first but after a few more classes you'll start to catch on. just dont be afraid to ask questions when you dont understand something.

as an instructor I personally find it hard to focus on the new people and have the guys thats been there the longest going as well. when I'm doing it alone Its alot to think about
