Okami - alarmed room on oni island?

Question

On Oni island theres a room that's filled with loads of eyes and when you go too far an alarm goes off and the room slowly fills with lava. I know you can swim throguh the lava with the fire relic thing but after a while you just drown... I tried hitting all the eyes at once wiht the brush but nothing happens, is there something else i'm not doing here?

Slash all of 5 eyeballs with cut ability thats the only way (they don't have to be slashed all at once).
