Question:

Okay, I'm clueless?

I knew there were drivers that came from other forms of racing, but I honestly thought they came from the SAME form of racing, I just found out that IRL and F1 are NOT the same thing (stupid, I know) I've been a nascar only kinda girl.

But I have a couple of questions-

1-Which ones came to nascar from IRL and which ones are from F1?

2-Are they both considered open wheel?*

3-I watched Monaco GP and Indy 500, they looked the same to me, what's the difference?*

*If you don't want to answer about questions 2 and 3 because they're not directly related to nascar, it's okay, I'll post in a different section, and no hard feelings*

  1. 1) of the three that came over in the past two years who are still around, jpm is the only one i know of who has raced CART, indycars, and F1, AND has had major wins and/or championships in each.  franchitti finished second to jpm in 1999 for the CART series championship - they actually tied in the points, but montoya had more wins.  he also won the indy 500 and the IRL championship last year. hornish has won three IRL championships and the indy 500 once.

    2) yes.  they are all considered open wheel.

    3) the cars are VERY different, as i'm sure the rules are as well.  all the details i couldn't tell you, but the overhead views alone showed how different the cars were.

of the new crop, juan pablo is the most accomplished overall.  check out his wikipedia page to see how many things he has done that only he and maybe one other driver have ever been able to accomplish across such a wide array of top-tier four-wheeled motorsports.

and these are just the drivers from the last two years.  tony stewart, robby gordon, a.j. allmendinger, and others are all open-wheelers who now race nascar.  tony did win the IRL championship in 1997 i think, and has been named on ESPN's list of 25 all-time top drivers.

  2. sorry Winter cannot help much with this question, i follow nascar only and a few times i watch Ashley and John Force which i know are nhra top fuel and funny cars..sorry

  3. sorry winter I'd help ya if I could but I'm strictly a NASCAR kind of girl too but good luck with getting your answers!

  4. i dont know nothing provide a link if u ask this question again , cuz i thought they were the same thing to maybe one is for younger enxiperenced drivers

  5. Francitti

    Hornish

    Stewart all ws in IRL

Montoya was in F1 and IRL

the big diffrence in IRL is the car mainly runs on a road course type or the streets such as Monaco. also F1 runs counterclockwise

it is difficult to explain the technical diffrences

  6. i know drivers now days

  7. Tony Stewart came from IRL

    he even won a championsip

  8. ''See... Your not alone''  !!!   lol

  9. 1.Sam Hornish, Dario Francitti, Jaques Villanuve, and AJ Allmendinger all came from IRL. Along with Tony Stewart, and Casey Mears. Villanuve raced in F1 for a while too. Juan Pablo came from F1 to Nascar, but did race in IRL and Cart also. Scott Speed is in the truck series, and he came from F1 also.

    2. Yes, they are both open wheeled.

    3. The main difference between the cars is the F1 cars are more like airplanes. They are very technologically advanced. They are quite a bit faster than an IRL car. And a steering wheel for an F1 car costs somewhere in the neighborhood of $50,000. It is ridiculous. I hope this helps you a little.
