I thought the idea was to just hit your opponent in the face enough times to knock them out on the floor...

But apparently there are points and some sort of decider and stuff involved... what??

  2. A LONG time ago, fights used to go for more than 40 rounds until one fighter would get knocked out or did not want to continue anymore.  Many times, both fighters would elect to stop fighting and the bout would be called a draw or a no decision.  Thats why when you look up a lot of older fighters' records, you will see so many "no decisions" on their record.  Boxing was also paced much differently back then than it is today- it was a very slow pace compared to today, which is why fighters went more than 40 or 50 rounds sometimes; keep in mind that this was ages ago.  Today, the pace is much faster and fights can go no longer than 12 rounds (3 minutes each), with a 1 minute break in between rounds.  They used to be 15 rounds, but due to safety issues and economic issues, they were shortened to 12- the Ray Mancini- Du Coo Kim fight played a major role in the shortening of fights.  However, knockouts still occur just as oftenly, its just that certain fighters who are not power punchers would prefer to outpoint someone instead of taking the much bigger risk of trying to knock someone out.  The points that you speak of are determined by the three ringside judges (the "deciders" that you mention).  If a fight goes the distance (does not end before the scheduled amount of rounds), then the judges hand in their scorecards to determine who was the winner.  Today, there is a 10 point must system, where the winner of a round gets 10 points, while the loser gets 9.  If a knockdown occurs, the loser gets 8, if 2 occur, then the loser gets 7 points and so on and so forth.  It used to be so that the winner of a round would get 1 point and the loser would get none, but this made for some unfair decisions because no credit would be given for scoring knockdowns.  You could knock someone down 10 times in the last 5 rounds, but you would still lose the fight because you lost the first 10 rounds- see what I'm saying?  If fights could go on until someone could no longer continue, then we would have much more deaths and injuries in the ring, especially with guys who refuse to go down or have granite chins, which is why there needs to be a time limit on boxing- it is a true dangerous, fighting-man's sport.  All sports need to have time limits because no one can go forever- you would be risking your health if you tried.

  3. Each fight has 10 rounds and each round lasts for a couple of minutes. After each round, judges vote on who got the most punches on their opponent. Whoever got the most punches gets 10 points and the other fighter gets 9. Whoever has the most points after 10 rounds is the winner.

  4. are you g*y?
