so yeah, she has high withers, and i dont like the blanket i use now, because the saddle goes down too much because of her withers.

i was wondering if there was a special kind of blanket so that then the saddle wont rest of her withers, and so the saddle is straight on her back.

and if so, is there a special name for the blanket?

thank you everyone!

oh and if this helps, she is a 16 year old Morgan/Quarter horse mix

  1. I would try a half pad or a bounce pad this takes pressure of the wither area and makes the saddle fit better. they are sometimes expensive, but they are worth it because they last a long time. you can find them on dover saddlery or and tack shop.

  2. I would start with a cut out pad and go from there...It's very difficult to find a pad that will take the place of an ill fitting saddle.  Sometimes, people will just add pad after pad, thing that it is going to correct the situation, it doesn't.

  3. There are many styles in both english and western style pads that promote relief of the withers, including wither cut-out pads, pommel pads, fleece half pads and therapeutic pads. Also, you might think of finding a saddle that clears the withers better (again, they make styles in both english and western).

  4. Check out this pad.

  5. riser pads work really well!

they can be put right on top of your saddle pad too!

its nice because they can be used in shows!  (well, hunter/jumper at least.  i'm not sure about western!)

you can also use a thicker baby/half pad!

i hope this helps and good luck!!  :]

  6. my horse roy has the exact same problem! its a trait from quarter horse genes. just put the saddle up higher... i recently got a quilted square saddle pad and that helped keep the saddle in place for me

  7. What you need is a pad that is built up along the sides and just has the material along the channel.

This is a built up, cut back pad and should work nicely on your horse.

  8. yupp!

i have a quarter horsey too!

i dont know what kind of thing we use

    sorry

  9. Well, You could try a rizer pad, a half pad, or a wither releaf pad.

You could try a half pad, with a rizor pad on top of teh half pad.

  10. Try a riser pad

  11. If the channel of the saddle isn't giving her withers enough clearance, no saddle pad will rectify the problem.  If the saddle is ok, but the pad settles back down and presses on the withers after you've tucked it up into the channel, then you could try one of the pads that is molded with space for high withers or a pad that is cutback.   But the saddle has to have a high enough channel to start with.
