okay. so my dad is quite a bit overweight. and we are figuring out ways to change his eating habits. he needs something he can take in the car to work with him. he always goes and gets donuts...which is something we are trying to kick. so...what kind of quick things should he grab?

he really likes granola bars...is there anything like that that is healthy and doesn't make you need to p**p a lot? and he has bad teeth so he needs something soft (so no nature valley bars)

thank you!

  1. Good idea to the first answerer. A breakfast burrito!

Or some yogurt, which really isn't filling but it can surely accompany something. I dont know much about diabetes and what diabetics should or shouldn't be eating, but I'm pretty sure both of those are okay?? PS ignore all the immaturity =]

Good luck, I wish the best

  2. I like the Taste of Home site. It has lots of good menus that are not only good for dad, but the whole family. The meals are not boring and I sure you can plan them as take along with him breakfast and lunch. Those are two meals you need to focus on and he needs to watch most.

    Best Wishes

  3. eggs

  4. banana, a yogurt, wholemeal toast

wow just read the above post

  5. I agree that yogurt, low-fat and low-sugar, is a good start--and he could even have a lo-carb granola bar or breakfast bar with that. Check on the carb contents of his breakfast foods--if you get him some no-sugar-added yogurt, he could have a regular granola bar with it. Stay around 20-25 total grams of carbs for breakfast in the whole meal.

An english muffin is better than a bagel: fewer calories and lower carbs. He could put some crunchy peanut butter on it, and a sliced banana.

Donuts are just plain BAD in the morning. Not only do they have a lot of fat and calories, they're loaded with simple sugars that burn up fast, raise your glucose level really high, then crash you down an hour later. AND they don't fill you up. You want to have a lot of fiber--like shredded wheat, whole-grain bread or toast, or nuts--and a good dose of protein. That keeps you from getting hungry before lunch, it's good for your metabolism, and it doesn't do the sugar crash.

An Egg-McMuffin from McDonalds is actually not a bad choice in the morning. They're not high in fat, they don't have a lot of sugar, and they fill you up pretty good. They're actually lower in fat than the breakfast burritos (McD's, I mean). Don't get the sausage mcmuffin with egg--just the regular one with the canadian bacon and egg.

You can always make your own homemade breakfast sandwiches using low-fat alternatives to the high-fat ones sold at the fast-food places. A vegetable burrito wrapper, some Egg-Beaters eggs, and a slice of low-fat cheese will strip off about 200 calories and many many fat grams and be very filling!

Make him a deal--he eats really healthy stuff 6 days a week, and he can have donuts for breakfast one day. I'll bet you a mint that in a couple weeks of eating like that, he'll probably not want the donuts any more!

Watch out for the diet foods. Sometimes to sacrifice fat grams they add sugar. That will be worse for him in the morning than the fat would have been.

Rule of thumb: the more homemade food you eat, the more weight you will lose. Control portions, control salt and sugar and eat as much real food (not processed) and whole grains as you can.

  6. How about a wrap with lunch meat or scrambled eggs and some yogurt and fruit to tame the sweet tooth.

  7. Light Yogurt or a banana
