I had to take my dog to the vet which was right down the road from the hospital. I had seen on many occasions the Radiologist bring in his dog and take it into his office leaving the door open. I felt that it would be fine if I done this, I brought the dog into the hospital and placed him in the ultrasound room while I fed it some ham and while it warmed up a little outside and then placed him in the car. The Radiologist came in and played with my dog not saying anything to me. The administration secretary came in and told me that I could not have him in the hospital, I said that was fine and put him in the backseat of my car with a comforter. She called my boss told her, she called a co-worker to come in and told me to leave. The Emergency Room was full so I continued to do my job until the coworker came in, she told me that I needed to leave right then. I was so flustered that I left all my things there and just left. I did not realize that the dog had used the bathroom under one of the stretchers in the Ultrasound room because the coworker would not give me time to check the room out before I left. I was fired. The ultrasound room is not used during the weekends unless I call someone in, so I knew that no patients would be in the room and planned to clean the room thoroughly with dispatch and alcohol before leaving that night. I was pushed out of the department so fast I had no time to do anything. I had never had any type of warning written or verbal and received good evaluations. I do not feel that this was fair is there anything I can do?

  1. Your rights are in your contract, not in law.  If you have a contract, you can enforce it.  If not, you can be fired at any time, for any reason or no reason, just as you can quit for no reason.  Even if someone else is not fired for the same reasons, that means nothing.  He may have a contract or he may be more valuable to the hospital.

  2. You were fired with cause. I am sure you violated a health law as well. Right now you are looking for a job and might find one. If you name is all over the paper as the woman who let her dog p**p in a room used by patients in hospital do you really think any other medical facility will every hire you even if you win?

Just start looking for another job.

  3. Crapshoot.  Your playing a difficult hand.

  4. Wait a minute. You work in a hospital? And you brought a dog into a hospital? And the dog peed in the Ultrasound room?

I would have fired you on the spot, too. No case.

  5. I agree with David...even if you won, that'd be bad publicity on your part. Just start looking for another job, and don't bring animals into a health facility again. Unless you plan on changing careers, I wouldn't sue.

Just so you know, a judge wouldn't see it as acceptable for you to let a dog soil the ultrasound room, just because a coworker does the same thing. You have no case.

  6. You are kidding you have to be to bring a dog into a hospital and let it soil the floor and wonder why you got fired. Yes go to an attorney.

  7. are you a nurse? what state do you work in? more than likely your gonna get unemployment due to the fact you were not given a warning.

  8. It sounds unfair, but it also sounds like they didn't break any laws. Unless you have a contract or are part of a union, you are an at-will employee and they can fire you for any reason, except gender, race, family status, etc.
