Back comb isn't a thing, it's an action. So by combing the hair against the direction of growth, you are back combing it.

People don't typically use a brush to back comb, they use a comb, hence the name. It is also called "teasing" the hair. It's used to make hair puff up.

To do it, grab a small section of hair around the top of your head. Pull it upwards and take a fine-tooth comb and start vigorously and rapidly combing it the opposite way while still holding it taut. After 5-10 seconds release and it should poof a bit. Continue for several more seconds and (optional but recommended) spray on hairspray to hold it up. Repeat with the rest of the hair on top.

It is quite damaging to the hair because it mats it together and rips the cuticles of the hair, causing split ends and ripped out hair once you try to detangle it. Don't do it too often, it's damaging. A safer alternative is to blow dry (on cool setting) your hair the opposite direction by holding up wet hair and blowing from underneath, upwards.
