Okay as far as english hunter jumper horse back riding goes, what does a "rated trot " mean?

    Rate =regulate. You can rate his canter, his tempo,his trot and so on:)  Its rather a overused word since in judging you are rated  ( scored)on how you rate ( adjust speed) the trot....someone get these guys a thesaurus!

    USPC has a lot of books and vids you might like that untangle the use of words and phrases for riding while showing you what is expected.


  2. To "rate" the trot, ( or any other gait) means that you are slowing the speed of the horse down. It can also mean that you are shortening the horse's stride ( say, for example if you are going to jump a fence or series of fences) using half halts or another means. Rating is done to ensure that that horse makes the correct number and size of strides in a given situation, whether to a fence or obstacle, or to a transition in a dressage test. All of the horse's gaits can be "rated"- that is, controlled for speed and accuracy. Hope this helps.
