  1. well i've lived in australia my whole life. i'm tanned.

it's just like america, some people are really dark, from the sun or not, and some are just naturally pale. i have a friend who's full on white, really pale. then i have a friend who looks like she lives under the sun she's just that tanned. it's just people, not where they live all the time.

and it also depends on where in australia, tasmania is cold a lot of the time then if you live in queensland you're more likely to find tanned people there.

  2. Why are Spaniards and Portuguese darker skinned than people from Northern Europe?

Australians are from Northern European stock.

  3. maybe because they don't like getting exposed to sun as in other regions people do. in south america, many people like to be exposed to sun a lot, i know that because i live in argentina.

  4. As others have pointed out, the majority of Australians have a northern European background, so our skins are naturally white.  South Americans etc come from countries where the skin colour is naturally darker.  Native South Americans, Africans, and most peoples living in equatorial countries are also naturally dark skinned.

Australians of European background DO tan when exposed to the sun.  And in the past many Australians acquired very dark tans.

However, due to the high incidence of skin cancer in Australia, most of us now use some sort of protection on our skin, or cover up with clothes.  So you won't see so many tanned people around now.

And to iansand9876 - Spain and Portugal are much closer to the tropics than the rest of Europe, check an atlas.  Also, in the 800s (maybe earlier) these countries were colonised by the Moors from North Africa, which of course added darker skin to the Spanish and Portugeuse gene pool.

  5. Austrailians are of English decent and technically were not native to Austrailia. If you look at native Austrailians, the Aboriginis - you will see their darker skin tone which they have been around Austrailia for hundreds and hundreds of years

The color of your skin is due to pigmentation that is carried down from your ancestors. Now a days people are concerned about the damaging rays from sun and use sun screen to prevent getting burned.

  6. aaaaaa silv, i dont get your question hundred persent....

  7. america has just as many beaches and sunny weather, why are they white skinned?

  8. I'm south african but i'm white. :P it's all got to do with your genetic background. anyways the native australians (aboriginals) do have dark skin so i really don't know what you're going on about.

  9. Because we have Northern European or British ancestry mostly.

The Australian native aboriginal skin is dark.

Our skin does tan after sun exposure.

With the hole in the ozone layer, skin cancer is on the rise here. We are educated about this, so most people take precautions against getting skin cancer these days. A lot of people try to avoid too much sun exposure by using a maximum protective sun tan lotion &/or protective clothing/hats etc.

  10. I guess you're not asking about the native Australian's then, the Aborigines, but asking about the pale skinned Europeans who did to Oz what they did to the US, basically invaded it, took all of it as theirs, tried their best to kill of all the natives in both places? If they've a brain in their heads they've learned just how bad the sun is for them & that tan's are in fact signs of damaged skin. They do have some of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world so they do try to protect their skin.

Unless, of course, you mean the native Australian's, the Aborigini People, because there skin is dark. You might even say black!

There. Is that what you wanted? Or what exactly is the point of your question since you honestly can research this information on the internet....you know it, you love it, and you actually use it because you can't have asked this question without it!!

Otherwise, please try to be VERY VERY VERY specific because it seems to me that there's something hidden in your question and without my mind reading abilities, I just can't quite put my finger on what it might be.

  11. Because they have mainly British ancestry, British skin is fair and doesn't tan well. South Americans have mainly Spanish or Portugese ancestry and they are naturally quite a bit darker than the British, with black or dark brown hair and olive skin. Basically most Australians are designed to live in the snow/cold. Our indigenous Aboriginal people have dark skin designed to suit the climate.
