  1. Disregard the idiot who posted first.

As for the firefighter part of your question, I don't think there is a set amount of college that you need, but you do need to take Firefighter training classes which you can take in a community college.

  2. in some states, such as Texas, it's the cops and child protective services who are the ones that abuse children.

And please don't be a firefighter unless you are strong enough for the job, which is unlikely if you are female.

  3. The most direct involvement in child abuse is in the police and child protective services and in child advocacy centers. The police one is obvious. CPS most places requires their investigators to have a bachelors degree. It doesn't always have to be in Social Work, but the MSW degreed folks move up faster. But you can get that later. Demanding work, with tough hours some times. If you catch a priority case at the end of the day, you can sometimes end up at 3:00 a.m. several counties away delivering a kid to a shelter. Typically heavy caseloads with absolutely NO down time. CPS investigators are an odd mix of detective (no gun) and social worker. Not for the faint of heart. Not because of the tragedies, although you have to function in a bad case. Most cases are pretty mild. But for the dirty places you have to go and the dumb people you deal with. State employment. Decent pay and good benefits.

Child advocacy staff are SW or psychology degrees. They do counseling and often do the forensic interviews of children. Better hours, lower pay.

You don't need college for most firefighting. But it helps at promotion time and may gets you more money. If you're preparing for firefighting in college, consider Public Administration or some of the newer public safety and security  programs. You'll one day get tired of humping hose.

  4. I would think to work with child abuse you'd need a degree in social work so they would be four years. As far as a firefighter, its four years also. But some states/counties don't require a college degree to become a firefighter. They want experience and training. And you have to be able to pass test and physical.
