first off, this kitten was needing a new/good home, so my husband and I went and picked him up today. when we got in the car to head home I noticed the kitten had fleas! Luckily I had 3 in 1 flea and tick shampoo for kittens/cats! I rushed him into the tub and bathed him really really well, since I have a little girl and 2 small indoor dogs. I put a flea and tick colar on him. After he had completely dried I checked him everywhere for fleas and didn't see any! Thank God!!

But I was wondering along with getting him the booster shots that he needs what other things should I be concerned about? for example toxoplasmosis- i read this can be dangerous for women who are preg. that they shouldn't change the litter box- I'm pregnant! Should I get my cat checked for it? What about ringworm and other diseases cats can carry? I know I should have thought about all this before I got the cat, but didn't think he was so neglected! We are giving him a much better home! Any ideas on what I need to ask the vet about? and why I should

Thanks!!

  1. I am happy the kitty has found a new home. And yes, please avoid cleaning or changing the litter box. You should really avoid being anywhere near the cat box until you are no longer pregnant. You can have your cat tested if it would make you feel more safe and secure. Ringworm is extremely itchy and I'm sure you would see some warning signs in your kitten. When you bring him in the vet will do a full exam, it's okay to ask lots of questions! Vets actually love when an owner shows extra interest in their pets health as well as their own health with their new animal companion.

  3. There is a test which can detect this bacteria which is dangerous for pregnant women but...it's a waste of time and money.  Just don't clean or change the litter box, kiss the cat, or let him near your face.  Make sure you wash your hands and arms thouroughly after handling him...otherwise feel free to play with him!  The bacteria is in the fecal matter and has to be ingested...so unless you chew on him you should be fine!

  4. there's usually a routine check list a vet does when it's a new kitten, ringworm should be checked out but because you are pregnant, you shouldn't be near the litter box or even the kitten until you know the kitten is safe. Just let the vet know the cat had fleas seems to of been neglected.
