  1. All cultures see it differant. Native americans believe that it is disrespectful to make eye contact with an elder, or anyone that is older then you. They believe that it is disrespectful because they are wiser then you. Looking into someones eyes means that you are equal to them. That you see eye to eye with them. And they believe that's not the case. You should humble them because they are wiser. However, I've been raised differantly. When I talk to someone, no matter their age or race, I look into their eyes. To me, that is respectful. That way they know that they have my full attention. It is something I can't avoid. I believe that if you look everyone else in the eye when in contact with them, you should do the same to a vietnam soldier. They deserve the same respect, right?!

  2. As I recall, every Vietnamese that I ever looked at looked right back at me, and was usually smiling! Young, old, man, woman, boy, girl. Cameras get mixed reactions, but I don't remember anyone being timid at looking me in the eye. Don't stare - that isn't appreciated anywhere.
