  1. Firstly you need to understand that when there is an equls sign this means it is an equation. With all equations the value on the LH side of the equals sign,  equals the value on the RH side of the equals sign. You can do anything to any equation as long as you do the same to both sides of that equation. You may multiply, or divide, add or subtract by what ever number or unit you wish.

With the first equation there are different units of measurement. The left hand shows 3918 cubic litres. The right hand side shows an unknown quantity( call it  'a' ) in litres multiplied by 18 centilitres. We should change all to centilitres first. Knowing that 1,000,000 centilitres equals one litre, this gives us

3918 x 1,000,000 centilitres on the LH side equals 1,000,000 x a centilitres x 18 centilitres on the RH side. Because we have one unknown 'a' we need to solve its value. So we divide both sides by 18 centilitres (to remove it from the RH side). This gives us on the right hand side 217,666,667 (no units here as the centilitres at the top and bottom cancelled one another out, and we are left with 1,000,000 a centilitres on the RH side because the 18 centilitres at the top and botom cancelled one another out. [Note: that dividing both sides of this equation by 18 centilitres was the same as moving the times 18  centilitres from the RH side of the equation to the LH side and in doing so we just changed the sign from times to divided by - the opposite sign]. Now because we want the answer in litres we divide both sides of the equation by 1,000,000 and now we have 217.6 recurring on the LH side equals 'a' on the RH side. Therefore the answer is that 'a' equals 217.6 (recurring) litres.

Lets look at the second question.

It helps to change units into the same type. In this case you are required to give your answer in centigrams, so change the 8000kg to centigrams. This gives 800,000 centigrams. Now multiplying this by 97 centigrams we get 7,600,000 centigrams squared (centigram x centigram = centigram squared).

    I hope this has helped.

  2. I think you cannot multiply volumes together, you can only add or subtract them.  Same with weights.
