Okay...so, I got my new glasses today. Should I wear them all the time?

My right eye has a number of -0.75.

My left eye has a number of -0.25.

The doctor said the negative means that it's for long distance.

So does this mean I CAN'T wear them during reading a novel or something?

  1. First of all, you have a really low number. If I were you I wouldn't wear them at all, seeing as how you probably only have problems seeing very distant objects. Now, you can definatly wear them when reading, although some doctors think that they can make the eye strain too much, because the focus doesn't change up close. You, however, have nothing to worry about. Your low number shouldn't bother you when reading (I have -5.50 in both eyes and have no problem reading up close with my contacts).

  2. You probably *shouldn't* wear them for reading.  If you can read at a normal distance (18 inches is the figure I have heard, and with your numbers you definitely can), there's no reason to wear glasses for that, and there is some thought that doing so could make your vision get worse than it would have otherwise.  And in fact, I would question wearing glasses at all when your sight is that good..

  3. if you're old and you need bifocals, then definitely you can't wear them when you read because the grade for reading is totally different from the grade for distance

BUT if you're still young then that glasses will do.

you should wear your glasses all the time. but if you're feeling light headed or your head hurts, don't wear it and go back to your doctor.

  4. You can wear them all the time but it is normally recommended that you don't as it can "train" your eyes to be lazy.

Your Doctor should have told you how to use them and you really should check with them as you only get one pair of eyes

  5. You can wear them for reading if you please, you just don't necessarily need them to do so.

  6. Actually you can wear them all the time, including when you are reading. You may want to get contacts soon and you keep the contacts in all day too.

I've worn glasses and contacts since I was 12. My vision got progressively worse as I got older - this is very common as your eye changes each year, until I leveled off. After a couple years with no change in my prescription, I got Lasik laser eye surgery. Now I see 20/20 again!

Some people will suggest that wearing glasses weakens your eye sight but this is NOT true - just ask your eye doctor.

  7. You got it backwards. the negative prescriptions means you are near sighted (cannot see far away). I am also near sighted, more so than you are and I read books with my glasses on all the time, it will not have any ill effects.

  8. If I had that prescription, I would hardly wear them at all.  I think the only thing I would wear them for is driving at night or activities where really good distance vision is required.

You can wear them while doing near work, but you really do not need to.

  9. I would ask your eye doctor. Only he can tell you whether or not you need to wear them all the time.
