I went out Saturday and bought my son an aquarium. I don't plan on putting fish in the aquarium until Wednesday. I followed all of the instructions and installed the heater and filter rinsed the live plants, etc. The only problem is the aquarium is in his bedroom and his room is upstairs which tends to be a little warmer thant the rest of the house. I checked the temperature in the aquarium this morning and it was 86 degrees! He would like some Dalmatian Mollies. Is this temp too warm for them? How do I make the water cooler? Should I unplug the heater? We bought the aquarium from Pet Smart and they seemed a little less knowledgeable about what to do and not all that helpful. Also how many Mollies can you put in a 10 gallon tank?

  1. The heater works like a thermostat...unless it's broken, it only turns on when the temperature gets too low, and it's off while the temperature is above the point you set it at. The heater won't be the problem.

You need to cool down the water. The cheapest way is to move it down to another room that doesnt' get as hot. If you can afford to get a cheap air conditioner to put in the room, that will work as well.

  2. mine is also hot too unplug the heater and it will cool down a bit. before you add fish you might want to cycle the tank. google how to cycle a tank. this will grow the bacteria the needs to be in the tank  that will turn the ammonia into nitrites then into nitrates. you could probably put about six. but they will have babies so only get all males or all females

  3. Mollies tend to prefer a temperature around 76°F. If your heater can be turned to the proper temperature turn it to 76°. If not, Wal-mart sells a heater made by Tetra that goes up only to 78°. Return the other heater if you can't adjust the temperature. While no fish are in the tank it's fine to have the temp at 86°, take the temperature again hours before you get the fish. Unplug the current heater if you have to. Or do what you have to do to bring the temperature down. Good Luck

  4. Unplug the heater room temperature for Dalmatian Mollies is fine if his room is warmer that is better but added with a heater is just too hot when you clean the tank try adding cooler water let it settle than the water will be a bit warmer and perfect for them

  5. i don't know change his room displug the heater it doesn't take a genius to figure this out

  6. Try turning down the heater,it should have k**b on top or somewhere on it for adjusting the temperature.
