  1. Perhaps give her as much hay as you can and give her weight builder or wheat germ and extra supplements in her feed.

    Beautiful horse by the way.

  2. I have been told that Purina Senior is the best feed to help a horse gain weight.   It's easy to digest and has added calories. XTN is good too. Sugar in the summer grass could be making her feel like running a lot.  You might have to give her up to five scoops of feed a day. Add water to it so she will hopefully  not colic with so much added feed. You can't force them to drink but you can add it to their feed. Good luck.

  3. Try using some sweet feed.  Mix it with her regular grain, about half of each every time you feed her.  It can put weight on really fast, without making her get "fat".

  4. she really dosn't look skinny to me, she just looks like a tb :P might be just me though - if u really want to put some weight on her you could look into a weight gain supplement for her

  5. Ive heard goo things about KER equi-jewl, its a rice bran supplement and full fat soy meal works great too

  6. hey i have a TB boy and he's a hard weight keeper too

i use weight gaining supplements ad it's only been about 2 weeks but it works !

cuz extra grain makes him even more mental and crazy

and more hay and more hay is not good on his stomach..he's got a VERY sensitive stomach

    so yeah try weight supplements!

easy on the stomach and even make the fur healthier and shinier! =)

even if she' doesn't need thw weight during the twinter it wil help in keeping the weight on

and she looks pretty good for 18 my guy had every rib and bone showing lol

  7. Try rice bran. It has a higher fat content than any other feed, and you can feed it to them in bulk without having to worry about colic. It is about the only thing I've found that can put and keep weight on my 18 year old TB mare. For weight gain, I have to feed 6lbs of it a day mixed with 6lbs of Senior.

Rice bran contains a lot of calories from fat to put the weight on a horse. It has 1/3 more calories than beet pulp, by weight. (i.e. you'd have to feed 1.3 pounds of beet pulp to get the same calories as you'd get from 1 pound of rice bran). This is a big reason why I prefer it...it's more cost effective. However, rice bran can have a mineral imbalance, so if you feed more than about 2 pounds of it, you should make sure a horse's diet is supplemented with a mineral block and/or a complete feed (hence why I feed Senior as well--if your horse is younger I'd try Strategy or something like that instead instead although Senior would work too).

And of course give her free choice grass hay, if you can.  Keeping their stomachs full works wonders.

P.S.  I don't think she looks that bad.  A bit on the skinny side but not horrible by any means.  But then again I like to keep my horses at a 4 or 5, I can't stand fat horses.

  8. WOW! Well if your vet doesnt know then I would suggest getting a new vet. I am not trying to put your vet down but he/she should know this. I dont want to tell you the wrong thing but I would suggest putting her out in the pasture for a while. She will fatten up in no time. Also my friends horse had the same issue, the other horses were kicking him thats why he didnt get any food. Make sure that isnt the problem!

    Hope this helped!

  9. other than feeding her extra Bermuda for a snack and more alfalfa then idk. she looks pretty decent for 18.

but u can probably look online for weight gaining supplements.

  10. I don't think she looks thin for a TB.

  11. cool oil helps the horse is retaining the nutrients in its feed.

    - she doesnt look bad for a thourobred, you do know that they are a lean breed?

i put cool oil into my old old old pony's hard feed because without it the feed goes straight through him and he doesnt retain anything

  12. When was the last time her teeth were floated?

    She is gorgeous!

  13. Nice looking girl... She isn't thin for a TB in my opinion. My guy looks about the same weight as her and my vet has insisted that he's 'perfect' and shouldn't gain anymore weight when I asked about ways to go about it. Thoroughbreds are usually slender. A healthy weight should be where the ribs are not visible, but can be felt easily.

  14. You might want to try some weight building supplements. I dont know much about them though, sorry. She doesnt look to bad

  15. That horse is not skinny - he is in perfect conditiong for a TB

  16. Hi Redial,

She does need a little weight put on,I can get her ribs and your are right about putting a few pounds on her Dear. Go to the feed store that you use and talk to the owner and see what he or she says. Your vet isn't helping you at all,so try this and you just might be surprised My Friend. She is a Great Looking Horse My Friend.. Good Luck and enjoy your friend.

    Your Friend,

    poppy1

  17. i think she is very pretty! and mabe just a little!

  18. you need to worm her and pour the feed to her

  19. A handful of brewers yeast is a very old method of increasing appetite - feed this once daily.

What a beautiful head and eye!
