Okay so i as flipping through channels last night and watched some colllege volleyball on ESPN...?

Question

Why were there two girls, one on each team, wearing different colors than their teammates? Does it mean they are freshmen or what?

They're called liberos.  They only play defense and can't rotate t the front row.  Generally they switch out with the middle hitters.  Basically they're there to be attacked by the other teams hitters and get the ball up.

The different colored shirts are the Liberos.  (correct pronunciation is LEE' be ro, even though that is not how most people pronounce it.  It is from the Italian word libre, meaning free.)  

They are defensive specialists.  They can not play in the front row.  They can not block or attack the ball.  They can not set the ball using their hands while in front of the 3 meter line for someone to attack.  The do not substitute in to the match, they just run in and the player they are replacing runs out from between the 3 meter line and the end line.

They're liberos. there job is to stop attacks and serves and are some of the most important people on the court. usually liberos are short because if your really tall its kind of hard to die for the ball when your legs are like a mile long. sometimes people will be libero just because they can't spike or serve because usually liberos don't serebut now i see lots of them serve. i myself want to be libero because first of all im pretty short, second of all i can't spike so its kind of my dream to be libero :)

They are wearing different color jerseys because of their positions.  They are playing the position called "libero" - a defensive specialist who can enter into the game to play a back row position for any other player.  There are some limitations as to their actions on the court - but they do not have to substitute in as other players.  

The different color jersey is there to allow officials and scorers ease in tracking their entry / exit from the game.
